Seems like I'm falling a bit behind on these things...
In any case, Tanaka pitched in his 17th start of the season on Monday the 16th against the Seibu Lions.
The game started off well enough, but he ran into trouble in the later innings. Through the first 6 innings, Tanaka gave up 2 runs while scattering 5 hits (1 homer) to go along with 5 strikeouts and 5 walks.
It was in the bottom of the 7th, with the score tied at 2, that Tanaka fell apart. He struck out the first batter he faced, then gave up a single to left. He got the next batter (GG Sato) to hitter a weak grounder to short, erasing the lead runner at second. Sato then proceeded to steal second with the number 5 hitter, Kazuhiro Wada, in the batter's box. With a runner now on second, Wada stroked a single to right, scoring Sato from second.
Tanaka didn't fair any better against the next hitter and gave up a single to center. He was lifted after that, having thrown 139 (!) pitches. He probably should have been lifted sooner, but I suppose hindsight is always 20/20.
Tanaka is now 7-4 with a 3.81 ERA over 106.1 innings.
