Yu Darvish: Game #24

by on Sep.14, 2007 @ 4:23 am, under NPB

Darvish ran into some bad luck against the Marines during his 24th start of the season. The first inning started off well enough as Darvish struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced (the second batter reached on an infield single). But the second inning was a different story. Darvish gave up a single to center to Jose Ortiz, then Darvish struck out Shoitsu Omatsu for the first out. Julio Zuleta followed with another single, putting runners on at first and second with only 1 out and Tomoya Satozaki coming up to bat next. Satozaki worked Darvish and on the 6th pitch of the at bat with the count 2-2, Satozaki drilled a 151km/hr fastball on the outter portion of the plate over the right field wall for his 12th homer of the season.

The 2 runs the Fighters scored both came in the top of the second with one out. Shinji Takahashi reached base on a single to left and Keizo Kawashima was hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, Makoto Kaneko connected for his 4th triple of the season, driving in both runners and giving the Fighters an early advantage. After that, the Fighters offense never really got things going, scattering 4 hits over the remaining 7 innings.

Darvish now has 197 strikeouts on the year, putting him well ahead of all other pitchers. His 1.97 ERA is bested only be Lotte starter Yoshihisa Naruse, who currently has a 1.82 ERA.
