Yu Darvish: Playoffs #2

by on Oct.18, 2007 @ 10:47 pm, under NPB

Darvish came through big time for the Fighters last night in the deciding game of a best of 5 series against the Lotte Marines. The game was of special interest because it pitted two of the brighter pitching stars of the Pacific League: Darvish and Naruse. For the regular season, they both finished with a 1.82 ERA (tops in the NPB) and both finished within the top 5 for wins -- Naruse had 16 and Darvish had 15. So there was a lot of excitement going into the game, as many thought it would be a lower-scoring, high excitement game.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for Naruse, who gave up 4 runs and was lifted after facing only 18 batters in the bottom of the 4th. The big blow came off the bat of Fernando Seguignol, a three-run blast in the bottom of the 3rd. Naruse never really re-gained his composure after that and was removed in favor of Hiroyuki Kobayashi. But he couldn't stop the bleeding and gave up 2 runs over 1.1 innings of work. The two pitchers that followed did a better job throwing 3 innings of no-run 1 hit ball, but it wasn't enough as the offense just couldn't get going against Darvish.

Despite pitching on only 4 days of rest, Darvish pitched a great game. He went 6.2 innings and gave up a run on 5 hits and struck out two. He threw a total of 96 pitches and faced 24 batters. Ryann Glynn and Micheal Nakamura finished off the game giving up a run between them on 3 hits and 2 strikeouts.

Darvish was given MVP honors for the series.
