NPB: Around the League

by on Feb.27, 2008 @ 9:39 pm, under NPB

The Pacific League Commissioner handed down his decision on the Jeremy Powell case. It basically "resets" the clock on Powell, meaning that both contract offers are null and void and Powell is a Free Agent once again. I'm guessing this isn't exactly what the Buffaloes wanted since it also most likely means that Powell won't be serving any sort of suspension.

It has been confirmed by a number of news sources that Powell will be joining the Softbanks Hawks, his original team of choice.

I'm still not sure what to think of Powell signing papers he thought were visa-related from the Buffaloes though.

Seems like rookie Sho Nakata is having some problem adjusting to the pros. In a game against the Swallows yesterday, Sho struck out 4 times in 5 trips to the plate. He also made an error on the field, capping his worst outing so far in his short professional career. After the game the Manager took him to the side for one-on-one practice. 145 swings later (which included 25 over the fence shots), Sho was apparently in a better mood, but still down on his performance.

The pre-season officially started on the 23rd of February and will continue on through the 23rd of March. During that span of time, 92 exhibitions games will be played. The Hawks are set to participate in 19 of them, most in the NPB. The Fighters have 11 games on their schedule, least in the NPB.

The irony here is that the Buffaloes pushed the commissioner to re-investigate Powell in hopes that they could extend his suspension… Unfortunately, instead of extending his suspension, the Buffaloes inadvertently got his sentence completely removed.
