And now batting, Hiram Bocachica

by on May.17, 2008 @ 3:23 am, under NPB

Any Bocachica fans out there?

On the year, he's batting .308 with 10 homers, 19 ribs, and a 1.112 OPS for the Seibu Lions. Bocachica in center for the Lions.

Fellow Lions teammate Craig Brazell (used to play for the Mets and Royals) isn't doing quite as well. He's hitting .233 with 12 homers, 25 ribs, and a .732 OPS. The 12 homers is tops in the Pacific League. He's usually playing over at first but is DH'ing in today's game.

The Lions also have two foreign pitchers on the roster: Matthew Kinney (Twins, Brewers, Royals, Giants) and Alex Graman (Yanks). Kinney has appeared in 7 games and pitched 36.1 innings with a 4.21 ERA. Graman has yet to give up a run in 15.1 innings and has 9 saves.

On the other side of the diamond first baseman Jose Fernandez (spent time in the Expos, Brewers, Angels, and Pirates organizations) leads the Eagles offense and the Pacific League with 41 ribs. He's hitting .315 with 6 homers and an .853 OPS.

Utility player Rick Short (Orioles, Cubs, Angels, Nationals) is hitting .339 batting with 4 homers, 22 ribs, and an .841 OPS. His .339 batting average is good for second in the Pacific League.

The Eagles also have Domingo Guzman (starter) on the roster. He's 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA over 34.2 innings. He's also pitching today and has thus far thrown 7 scoreless innings while giving up 3 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2.

Rick Short has hit just about everywhere he’s been. His career minor league line is .319/.373/.451, and yet he only had a cup of coffee for the Nats in 2005 when he hit .400 in eleven games. It’s nice to see him getting a shot in Japan.

Rick must be feeling pretty good about himself in the NPB because he has his first name on the back of his uniform.

Short was also with the Eagles the previous two years. In 2006 he hit .314 and in 2007 he hit .330. During his one year stint with the Marines in 2003, Short hit .302.

For a corner position player though, he doesn’t have much pop.

Brazell had massive pop in the minors and never had a good eye or was patient at the plate.

Brazell is pretty much doing the same with the Lions so far this season.

In 202 ABs over 47 games he’s got 13 homers and 28 ribs. But he also has 56 strikeouts vs 7 walks, has grounded into 3 double plays, and only has 44 hits (27 of them singles).
