Yoshinori (佐藤由規) gets his first victory as a Swallow

by on Sep.06, 2008 @ 12:07 pm, under NPB

In just his second professional start with the Yakult Swallows (東京ヤクルトスワローズ), Yoshinori Sato (佐藤由規) managed to contain the Yomiuri Giants' (読売ジャイアンツ) offense to just 3 runs on 2 hits (1 homer), 2 walks, and an HBP. He threw a total of 99 pitches over 6 innings and struck out 8 of the 23 batters he faced, including Michihiro Ogasawara (小笠原道大) twice and Alex Rarmirez (アレックス・ラミレス) once.

In watching some of the highlights, he looked like he had good control over his pitches, but seemed a bit wary of throwing his fastball.

Incidentally, Yoshinori's first start against the Yokohama Bay Stars (横浜ベイスターズ) last week (8/30) didn't go quite as smoothly. In just 1.2 innings he gave up 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits (1 homer) while striking out only 2.

I'm not sure how the rotation will end up working out over the course of this month, but his last two starts have come on a Sunday. That means there's a good chance he's final starts will also come on Sundays. The Sunday that falls on the 20th happens to be a home game against the Yokohama Bay Stars. If he gets the nods, I just might have to get my butt down to Jingu Stadium (明治神宮野球場) to get a look see.

It looks like the Swallows will end up having a better season than they did last year, and this might end up giving them even more reason to look forward to 2009.

I’m not too worried about the Swallows and their pitching. Their offense is what concerns me. Losing Ramirez to the Giants really hurt the team this year. I think the Swallows were really banking on Aaron Guiel to do the heavy lifting, but he just hasn’t been able to do it.

BTW: the papers are reporting he hit 155km/h (96mph) on the radar gun last night.
