Junichi Tazawa to declare his intentions of going to the Majors?!

by on Sep.07, 2008 @ 1:02 am, under NPB

Daily Sports is currently reporting that Junichi Tazawa (田沢純一) may be getting ready to announce his intentions of skipping the Amateur Draft and going straight to the Majors.

Many Japanese scounts feel that Tazawa could easily be the first pick in the Amateur Draft, getting interest from teams like the Yokohama Bay Stars, Orix Buffaloes, Nippon Ham Fighters, Chunichi Dragons, and Chiba Lotte Marines. However, Tazawa has expressed a strong desire to play in the Majors and some feel that he may make an announcement that he'll be skipping the draft to play in the Majors as early as the 11th, which would mark the conclusion of the tournament he's currently playing in.

If Tazawa skips the draft and signs with a team in the Majors, it'll be a fairly big loss for the NPB. I would have to assume that at some point, rules will be created in order to keep this from happening again.

Scounts from the Braves, Yankees, Pirates, Red Sox, Cubs, and Mariners have been seen in the stands.

It will be interesting to see how fast the rules get changed, and if any other players or Major League teams take advantage of it before the opportunity is closed off.
