by on Oct.01, 2008 @ 10:34 am, under NPB

Central League

The Yakult Swallows beat the Hiroshima Carp, 13-3.

The Swallows banged out 15 hits (including 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 2 home runs) to score 13 runs against the Carp. They sent 14 batters to the plate in 4th when they scored 9 runs on 6 hits, 5 walks and 1 hbp. If not for a GIDP by Hiroyasu Tanaka to end the inning, the Swallows may have scored even more runs in 4th.

The Carp scored 3 runs on 8 hits, but sqandered at least two chances to score more. In the top of the 2nd Kenta Kurihara started the inning with a double. A fly out, followed by two consecutive singles loaded the bases with 1 out for Yoshikazu Kura. He managed to drive in one of the three runners on base with a grounder to short, but the two others remained stranded as Yuki Saito struck out.

The other missed opportunity came in the 5th when the Carp managed to load the bases with 1 out but managed to score only one run on a sac fly. Scott Seabol recorded the final out of the inning with a fly ball to left.

NOTES: Norichika Aoki went 4-for-5 and raised his batting average to .359.

The Orix Buffaloes beat the Softbank Hawks, 4-1.

30,175 fans gathered Kyocera Dome to watch Kazuhiro Kiyohara's Retirement Game. The Buffaloes will be involved in the Climax Series but Kiyohara wanted to retire before the series because he felt the younger players would benefit from playing more than he would.

Kiyohara ends his storied career by going 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and 2 strikeouts. He finishes the season batting .182 over 22 games (4-for-22) and struck out 11 times.

As for the game itself, both pitchers tossed complete games. Toshiya Sugiuchi went 8 innings for his complete game while giving up 4 runs on 8 hits (1 homer) and struck out 13. Kazuki Kondo picked up his 10th victory of the season and tossed 9 innings for his complete while giving up an earned run on 5 hits, 4 walks, and a HBP. He also struck out 4.

Tuffy Rhodes hit his 40th home run of the season in the fourth with a runner on.

NOTES: Special guests included Seatle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki and the singer behind "Tombo," Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi. The song "Tombo" has become something of a theme song for Kiyohara over the years. Because of this, Nagabuchi wanted to perform the song live at Kiyohara's retirement game.
