Koji Akiyama to manage Softbank Hawks next season?

by on Oct.03, 2008 @ 4:32 am, under NPB

Koji Akiyama (秋山幸二) has been chosen to lead the Softbank Hawks next season. The Hawks are expected to make an annoucement after the regular seasons ends. Other changes in the coaching staff will probably include naming Yoshiie Tachibana (立花義家) as the new batting coach and promoting Hiroshi Moriwaki (森脇浩司) to Head Manager (?).

However, when Akiyama was approached while on his way back to Fukuoka, he said, "I still haven't heard anything from the team or the owner. They're supposed to decide sometime on the 10th or 11th, right? I know the papers mentioned this before."

Sadaharu Oh is said to have a lot of pull on who will become the next manager of the Hawks. "I'd like the person who succeeds me to at least use parts of my philosophy in running this team. Bringing in people from the outside, they won't understand the Hawks' tradition." When asked about what he thought of Akiyama, Oh said, "He's been the manager for Ni-gun, the co-ordination coach, chief coach... He's building up a resume to become manager."

Incidentally, there were rumors of Atsuya Furuta being a candidate for the manager's position, but it's obviously that Sadaharu Oh would like someone from the inside to carry on the tradition.

This is a little disappointing after reading the other entry about Furuta being a candidate, but when you consider how long Oh managed the Hawks as well as his stature, this makes sense.

Were you actually able to ream my entry on Furuta? I thought I hid it.

Actually, there are some interesting things in the Furuta article so I suppose there isn’t much of a need for me to try and keep it hidden.
