by on Oct.03, 2008 @ 9:47 am, under NPB

Central League

The Yakult Swallows beat the Hanshin Tigers, 7-5.

The Tigers appeared to have the game in the bag, but the Swallows rallied for 7 runs over their last two frames. Yuya Ando isn't really known for pitching deep into games, but he had held the Swallows to 3 hits and no runs over his 6 innings of work. The minute he was replaced, everything changed.

The Swallows began the 7th with three straight singles to load the bases. That was followed by a strike out and then a ground out that scored a run. Noichika Aoki followed with a single to drive in the second run of the inning. Kenzo Kawashima cleared the bases with a triple and the inning finally ended with a strike out.

The 8th started with a double, a failed double that erased the lead-runner, a walk, and single to load the bases. Kyuji Fujikawa entered the game at this point and tossed a wild pitch, allowing the tying run to score. He then served up a tie-breaking 2-run double to Ryohei Kawamoto.

NOTES: Aoki went 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, a strike out, and an IBB. He is now batting .357.

Pacific League

The Chiba Lotte Marines beat the Rakuten Eagles, 7-3.

After having a fairly strong September, the Eagles have now lost 3 games in a row -- consistency has been an issue with the Eagles all season. Jose Fernandez and Takeshi Yamasaki together went 0-for-8 with 3 strike outs. Kensuke Uchimura went 2-for-4 and drove in 2 of the 3 Eagle runs.

The Marines sent 10 batters to the plate in their 6-run 5th, going 4-for-6 with a double and 4 walks. If not for a caught stealing after a strike out, the inning may have ended up worse for the Eagles.

NOTES: The Eagles have now matched their 75 losses from last season. ... Rick Short did not play.
