Baseball Commentator Akinobu Mayumi to replace Akinobu Okada as Tigers’ Manager?

by on Oct.17, 2008 @ 12:52 pm, under NPB

Akinobu Okada tendered his resignation with the Hanshin Tigers on the 14th. Okada has said that he decided to take responsibility for the Tigers finishing in second by resigning his post as manager of the Tigers. The owner of the Tigers, Shinya Sakai, reportedly offered Okada a 3-year extension by Okada was not interested and declined.

Earlier on the 17th, rumors placed baseball commentator Akinobu Mayumi (55) at the helm to replace Okada, but it now appears as though those reports were a bit premature -- the front office has not officially committed to hiring Mayumi yet.

(If I recall correctly, a sports program I watch earlier today mentioned something about a potential announcement early next week.)

It will be interesting to see if this has any kind of effect on their play in the playoffs. Do you think the front office is just not committing to Mayumi yet in hopes that Okada will change his mind?

I haven’t really been following this story very closely, so I don’t know the intricate details, but based on what I’ve read, it sounds to me like Okada won’t be budging on this. The fact that he lost a 13 game advantage over the Giants is a fairly big deal and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if there was a lot of tension between Okada and the management.

I do find the timing quite odd though. Seems like he could have waited until the end of the Nippon Series.
