Nikkan Sports: Tyrone Woods isn't sure that he'll return to Japan next season and could also be mulling retirement. It appears as though a lot will depend on the dollar figures.

Nikkan Sports: Craig Brazell has returned to the States and may be leaving the Lions. After getting hit in the head with a baseball against the Rakuten Eagles, Brazell has yet to return to the field. While he appears to be fine physically, Brazell is still suffering from dizzy spells and will continue his rehab in the US.

Sports Hochi: The Swallows nabbed Rafael Miranda Fernandez with their supplementary (Ikusei) draft pick. He's a Brazilian exchange student that can throw 150km/h.

Sports Hochi: Katsuya Nomura is releasing a CD filled with his "isms." He's become something of a present-day Yogi Berra.

Sports Hochi: Bobby Valentine is trying to convince Hisayoshi Chono to join the Chiba Lotte Marines. Chono appeared down that the Giants skipped over him again this season and said that he wasn't sure about whether or not he would join the Marines.

Gen, did Hisayoshi Chono waver a bit on his demands about only playing for the Giants? Also, have you heard anything about Nomo possibly being the pitching coach for the WBC team?

I know going into the draft, Chono mentioned that he didn’t want to play for any one except the Giants and that he was willing to return to amateur baseball if he wasn’t selected by them. And in the article I mentioned above, he did say he was 50/50 in terms of signing with the Marines. When I saw his reaction on TV last night he looked pretty disappointed and sad.

As for Nomo… I’ve heard a couple of rumors about it, but nothing concrete. I’ve also heard Kuwata’s name thrown around as well.

I saw this article referenced about his demands in regards to the Giants. If it’s not too much trouble Gen, would you mind giving the general gist of it?

Interesting. The article you have linked to mentions that Chono did indeed say he would most likely sign with which ever team picks him. I haven’t read too many Sponichi articles lately (for no particular reason) and this might actually be the first article I’ve read with this angle.

The article also mentions that the Tigers might pick Chono because they have a need for some right-handed power in the outfield. Plus, Kanemoto is getting older so someone will need to fill-in when he leaves.

Incidentally, the article titles translates into something like "Chono changes his tunes: teams other than the Giants OK! Could land with Hanshin." However, no where in the article does it really say that with 100% certainty.

I think the final quote they use from Chono is the most telling. The reporter is asking Chono what he would do if another team other than the Giants picks him. His response: "All there is to do now is wait until draft day. If another team picks me? I’d be grateful for that, but… I haven’t really thought about it."

Thank you Gen. It sounds like the author may have made a bit of a leap with the title.

I think it was just a way to get more coverage — give it a sensational title and more people will read it. I guess in that sense, the media is the same in every country.
