NPB News and Notes from 11/7: Tazawa, 3-4 years at $7M?

by on Nov.06, 2008 @ 6:55 pm, under NPB

Sponichi: Hiroyuki Nakajima and Toru Hosokawa shouldn't miss any time off and both are slated to start tomorrow night's game. However, the Lions aren't going to take any chances and are prepared to call up two players if necessary.

Sponichi: Daisuke Miura will decide whether or not to exercise his FA option after the 10th. The Bay Stars will do their best to try to keep him from leaving.

Sponichi: Tomoyuki Kubota and Kenta Abe may be joining the Hanshin starting rotation next season. Kubota was part of the JFK trio in the pen but new manager Mayumi believes he, along with Abe, can be an important part of the rotation next season.

Sponichi: Hidetaka Kawagoe (1 year, 6,600-man) and Hirotoshi Kitagawa (1 year, 8,500-man) will be returning to the Buffaloes next season.

Sponichi: Cleveland Indians GM Mark Shapiro apparently believes that Junichi Tazawa could command a total contract worth upwards of $7M over 3-4 years (at least assuming I'm reading things right).

Sports Hochi: The Yokohama Bay Stars are taking a look at Taiwan Whales lefty Yu-Chieh Shen (沈鈺傑).

Sports Hochi: Jose Fernandez is drawing interest from the Hashin Tigers. Fernandez has gone on record as saying that while he enjoys playing in Sendai, he wouldn't mind playing somewhere else either. He has spent time with the Marines, Lions, and Eagles over his 6 years in the NPB.

I can’t read the article you linked, but $7M was also used in the back end of this article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Speaking of Tazawa, what’s your best guess of what level you think he would begin at over here?

I don’t really see him making an immediate impact for anyone. He has never pitched an inning of pro ball over here. If we assume that the NPB is somewhere between AAA and the Majors, then the amateur leagues would most likely fall somewhere between AAA and AA. But I’m not sure if the conversion really is that simple.

If the team that signs him, tries to rush him, I think it’ll be a mess.
