NPB Roundup 12/1: Tazawa and Red Sox; Darvish gets a 7,000-man yen raise

by on Dec.01, 2008 @ 4:33 am, under NPB

Sanspo: Jose Fernandez and Domingo Guzman will not be returning to the Rakuten Eagles next season.

Sponichi: The Eagles have decided to keep Rick Short, Fernando Seguignol, Marcus Gwyn, and En-Yu Lin for the 2009 season.

Sanspo: Yu Darvish has broken another contract record. The Ham Fighter have given Darvish a 7,000-man yen raise, making his salary for 2009 2-oku, 7,000-man yen (roughly $2.7M) plus bonuses. The previous high for a player going into his fifth season was set by Norichika Aoki (2-oku, 2,000-man). When Darvish was asked about his season, he said, "My stats weren't all that bad this year, but the team didn't win and we couldn't get the title, so it wasn't a very good season for me."

Sponichi: Quoting this Boston Globe article, Junichi Tazawa has apparently come to terms with the Boston Red Sox. The details: a major league 3-year deal worth $3M. While the contract is only 3 years, the Red Sox will actually keep control over him for 6 ML years.

If Darvish does indeed stay in the NPB long term like has stated he wants to, do you think the Fighters will eventually have issues keeping him due to financial reasons?

I’m sure they will. But he’s really the face of that franchise. I can’t really imagine him in another uniform.

Likely destinations would of course run the usual gamut: the Tigers and the Giants.
