NPB Roundup 12/2: Guiel to return to Swallows? Takahashi throws an MLB ball for the first time

by on Dec.01, 2008 @ 9:54 pm, under NPB

Sanspo: Ken Takahashi has started tossing (50 pitches) around an MLB regulation ball in preparation for his journey Stateside. When asked about the differences in the balls used in the Majors, Takahashi said, "The ball seems to slip a bit and the stitching feels a bit rough. There doesn't seem to be a very big difference in size though."

Sanspo: Aaron Guiel might be returning to the Swallows after all. But it will largely depend on how well he recovers from his injury (bones chips in his right elbow for which he had surgery back in October). I'd like to see Guiel given another chance with the Swallows. If he's healthy, I think he has the ability to give the Swallows some power.

Sanspo: The Tigers will most likely start the season with 5 foreigners on the rosters: Kevin Mench, Aarom Baldiris, Jeff Williams, Scott Atchison, and Chris Resop. But with Daisuke Miura turning down their offer, the Tigers may be looking to add one more, specifically a lefty starter.

If they get favorable reports on Guiel’s injury, I agree with you about giving him another shot. He’s already familiar with the team and the league, and his ’07 season was pretty solid despite not hitting for a high average (.245/.381/.493).

I probably have a bit of an attachment with Guiel because of his short stint with the Yanks. He seemed like a really nice guy and it would be nice to see him succeed with the Swallows.

If he’s willing, maybe the Swallows can offer him an incentive laden contract.
