According to this Sponichi article, Bobby Valentine might be in hot water with the team right now. In my last update I mentioned that 2009 would be Bobby's last as manager for the Marines, and now I think that this could be a partial reason for that.
During the MLB Winter Meetings, Bobby Valentine approached the agent for Dong Joo Kim (INF, KBO, Doosan Bears) for a little more information on the player. Bobby apparently remembered hearing the name when the Doosan Bears president mentioned wanting to sign him for his team. When Valentine approached Kim's agent, he did so without informing the Marines -- he probably thought it wasn't necessary since it was a simple inquiry.
But things are never so simple, are they?
Either his simple inquiry was blown out of proportion, or someone's lying. I'm guessing the inquiry was blown out of proportion and that Valetine's getting a lot of more flak than he deserves.
So now we have a Doosan Bears team that isn't happy because the Marines were talking to a player they were interested in obtaining without going through official channels, and a Marines team that isn't happy because Valentine, who was working on his own private time, was doing something that wasn't officially approved of by the team.
The Doosan Bears president is set to meet with Valentine sometime over the next 2-3 days. The Bears president has also gone on record to say that he's not making any comments or assumptions until after he's spoken to Valentine.
Hopefully all of this is just a simple misunderstanding and everything is ironed out before the start of the season. Otherwise things could get a little hairy for Bobby in 2009. And it would be an awful shame for him to finish things out on such a negative note.
BTW: Bobby has an entry up on his side of the story. From that one entry, it sounds like this is all just one big misunderstanding.
