NPB Roundsup 1/1: Seibu Lions get new logos

by on Dec.31, 2008 @ 8:24 pm, under NPB

Mainichi: The Seibu Lions have introduced a new logo and pet mark in celebration of their 60th year in the league. The new logos will likely mean a change in uniform designs as well.

The new logo borrows elements from back when the team was called the Nishitetsu Clippers. The coloring for the logo is Legend Blue, which is a mix of black, representing the Nishitetsu Clippers, and blue, representing the Seibu Lions.

Pet Mark

The Lion used in the team flag (created by Tedzuka Osamu) will remain unchanged.

Sanspo: The Baltimore Orioles have made an offer to Kenshin Kawakami. The ball is now apparently in Kawakami's court. No word on how much was offered.

Sports Hochi: The Yomiuri Giants led the NPB in payroll for the 15th straight season. They dished out 4.55B yen (~$50M) in salaries last year. The Hanshin Tigers had the highest payroll of non-foreign players last year at 3.22B (~$35.5M) yen.

If they get new uniforms, I wonder if they will be similar to the throwbacks. I actually liked the light blue look as it’s what I have always associated with the Lions.

I’m guessing that they might be.

The new retro look feels a little strange to me though. I know it’s going to be their 60th season and that they are trying to create a link to their Nishitetsu past, but it almost seems a bit too forced. And it’s not like their current logo and color scheme were lacking.
