NPB Roundup 1/5: Lions re-post Koji Mitsui

by on Jan.05, 2009 @ 6:06 am, under NPB

Sanspo: The Seibu Lions have re-signed Alex Graman (150M yen) and Hiram Bocachica (65M yen) to 1-year contract extensions.

Sanspo: The Seibu Lions have also signed John Wasdin to a 1-year 50M yen contract. He will wear the number 37 this season.

Sanpo: Koji Mitsui must really want to go to the Majors. The Lions have submitted the paperwork on the 7th in order to post Mitsui for the second time this off-season. Bids will be accepted starting the 8th.

I really don't see much of a market for him at this point. Seems like teams can take a better risk on players from within instead of paying double (the bid and then the salary) to get Mitsui.

Japan Times: Kenshin Kawakami has apparently narrowed his destination team down to three teams: the Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins. The article also mentions how strange it is that not much has come out of the Koji Uehara camp.

Gen can give a better explanation, but I think it is just the word for baseball, though literally it translates to field ball.

It will be interesting to see what Bocachica can do if he gets a full season. The twenty homeruns in only 239 at-bats is impressive, but the walk to strikeout ratio (24:76) less so.

thx mike, also im surprised hiram is that good, especially after seeing him suck for the dodgers. did he go on roids, or did he just start swinging for the fences everytime out? sure looks like it by those 76 strikeouts in only 239 at bats… is it much easier to hit homeruns in japan? how do stadiums compare in size, and does the ball have more pop?
