NPB Roundsup 1/13: Various notes

by on Jan.13, 2009 @ 3:53 am, under NPB

The Hiroshima Carp announced that they have re-signed Ben Kozlowski to a 1-year deal worth 16.5M yen plus incentives.

Yukan Fuji reports that the Orix Buffaloes' merchandising department is worried about their forecasted sales figures this season. Last season, Kazuhiro Kiyohara was a driving force in sales, but without him on the team anymore, there is concern that there might be a "slump" in Orix merchandise sales this coming season.

The article also mentions that Kiyohara was really the first player since Ichiro Suzuki to have such positive marketability. That doesn't mean the team hasn't had it's fair share of popular players since, but none have sold items as well as Ichiro and Kiyohara.

The Buffaloes are currently looking into expanding merchandising efforts for players like Tuffy Rhodes and Alex Cabrera.

It looks like Kozlowski didn’t do particularly well last season.

I would guess that Tuffy is fairly popular given how much time he’s spent with the Buffaloes’ franchise as a whole?

AFAIK, Tuffy is a fairly popular player. And 10 years worth of history with the Buffaloes should make him a fan favorite. It certainly make sense for the Buffaloes to try and market him. But whether or not that will translate into a profitable merchandising program, I’m not sure.
