NPB Roundup 1/14: Japan ranked 4th in the world by the IBAF

Sanspo is reporting that the expiration on Koji Mitsui's posting chances have been changed from the 14th to the 16th. Apparently the time differences messed things up a bit and MLB officials didn't get a chance to see the e-mail submission until the 12th.

Japan is ranked 4th in the world by the IBAF. The top three positions belong to Cuba, Korea, and the United States. Here's the complete list at the IBAF site along with notes on how points were scored (pdf) in order to rank teams.

The Atlanta Braves signed Kenshin Kawakami to a 3-year deal worth $24M.

This deal surpasses the deal Koji Uehara got from the Baltimore Orioles: 2-years for $10M. It's also more than twice as much as he probably would have made had he stayed in Japan (estimates are at about $3.8M).

As with Daisuke Matsuzaka and his nickname "Dice-K", it seems like the search is on for a nickname for Kawakami. The choices include: "The New Guy," "Kawakamakazi," "Kawabunga Kawakami," Kawa Kama Chameleon," and "Kawakami the Tsunami."
