Atlanta Braves sign Japanese high school prospect to minor league deal

This sort of flew in under the radar. And I may have missed the headline entirely had I not randomly decided to visit the Mainichi News website.

In any case, it appears that the Atlanta Braves signed a Japanese high school prospect by the name of Yoshinori Yamarin to a minor league contract. Yamarin was a student at Nissei Gakuen High School in Hyogo Prefecture and stands 186 cm talls and weighs 86 kg. He has never been to the Koshien and sports a fastball in the low 90's.

Said Yamarin, "I'll throw hard and, in two or three years' time, want to be able to sign a major league contract." The article also mentions that he'll be spending time in Australia at a player development center later on this year.

Not much the teams can say on Yamarin as they all passed on him in the draft, even as an instructional squad player.

I think the fact that his school never reached the Koshien really worked against him. It’s also probably why this wasn’t such big news over here.
