NPB: World Baseball Classic (WBC) Mania

by on Feb.16, 2009 @ 6:59 pm, under WBC

Over 40,000 fans showed up at Miyazaki Prefecture Sports Park. That eclipsed the current training season's previous high of 37,000 set by the Yomiuri Giants on Sunday.

That seems like a lot, considering it was a weekday. I wonder how many more fans will head down to Miyazaki during the coming weekend.

Other interesting news:

  • 19 vendors located outside of Sun Marine Stadium reported that they sold out of food.
  • WBC merchandise: 300 t-shirts, 300 caps, and 200 WBC baseballs were sold before noon yesterday. All 30 of Ichiro Suzuki's number 55 Seattle Marines t-shirts sold out within 30 minutes of the store opening.
  • Asahi Beverages announced their official partnership with the WBC yesterday.

There seems to be considerable more interest in the WBC in Japan than there is here in the States.

Japan is a very patriotic country when it comes to things like this. Losing at the Olympics probably doesn’t help either.
