This is probably just a passing rumor so I wouldn't really put too much behind it, but I found it interesting and figured I'd pass it on.
Yukan Fuji published a piece on how there might be a chance that Katsuya Nomura becomes the manager for the Bay Stars next season. As everyone knows, Nomura's contract with the Eagles ends at the end of the year and while he hasn't said anything about what he intends to do, it's certainly possible that he might look for another job elsewhere (if he doesn't decide to try and return to the Eagles).
But there's more...
A few days after the piece was in print and on news stands, an unnamed Yokohama Bay Stars player contacted Nomura at his home.
"Hmm... I wonder who that player could be," said Nomura coyly when asked by a reporter. "We didn't really talk about anything specifically, he just said, 'Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.'"
There is no direct translation for "yokoshiku onegaishimasu." In fact, it can have a number of different meanings depending on how it's used, but in this particular case, it means something along the lines of, "if you become manager of the Bay Stars, I wish you luck and I hope we can work well together."
So, did the unnamed player call Nomura in order to try and recruit him?
Incidentally, the Bay Stars are owned by TBS, a broadcasting company in Japan. The Eagles owned 19.83% stock in TBS, but ended up selling the stock back to TBS on March 31st of this year.
Rakuten had been trying to enter into a business merger of some sorts with TBS, but was met with strong opposition from the station (at one point they were even trying to take-over the company). The final nail in the coffin came earlier this year when TBS became a government-certified broadcasting holding company, effectively ending any ambitions Rakuten may had had in trying to take over the company (Japanese law doesn't allow one single shareholder to own more than 33% of the voting rights in holding companies).
Which brings me to this final tidbit...
TBS is apparently working on a special about Katsuya Nomura's 1,500th victory (5 more to go I think) and has been following the manager around since Opening Day. TBS is, of course, denying any connections. But how sweet would it be if TBS could help the Bay Stars steal Nomura away from the Eagles?
I suppose only time will tell.
