NPB: Giants’ Edgardo Alfonzo breaks up Weiyin Chen’s no-hit bid

by on Apr.18, 2009 @ 3:20 am, under NPB

Weiyin Chen was tossing a no-hitter going into the top of the 5th and retired the first two batters before giving up a single to Edgardo Alfonzo.

The out previous to Alfonzo's single saw Masahiko Morino make a nice diving grab at a grounder to third and throwing Yoshitomo Tani out at first. As with many no-hitters, it was a play that made it seem as if Weiyin would be able to hold on. But Alfonzo took Chen's first pitch between the third baseman and shortstop for the Giants' first hit of the game. It was Chen's 50th pitch of the game; a curve up and in clocked at 105km/h.

The Dragons have a 1-0 lead, now in the bottom of the 5th.

Alfonzo just hit a single up the middle to get the Giants on the board. They now trail 2-1 in the in the 7th with 1 out and runners on first and third.

Alfonzo was just lifted for a pinch-runner.

And Sakamoto just pulled a double down the third base line, out of the reach of a diving Morino. Game is tied at 2 with runners on second and third.

Chen strikes out pinch-hitter Shinnosuke Abe to end the inning.

The Giants ended up beating the Dragons, 3-2. Takayuki Terauchi hit a tie breaking solo home run in the 8th to give the Giants a lead they would hold onto.
