So I was watching the morning news and apparently Hideki Irabu is trying to make a comeback.
But not in Japan.
At the age of 39, he's trying to make a comeback in the US of A.
The fat toad re-cometh...
Irabu retired from Japanese baseball in April of 2005, so he's been away from the sport for a while. But according to current reports, he's already hitting 90mph on the radar gun and has even played in a few games at the amateur level. Irabu apparently has his sights set on signing a contract with a team in one of the independent leagues in order to make his way back to the Majors.
An undislosed source said, "It's a fact that Irabu is trying to make a comeback. His conditioning is getting better and he wants to try and play some baseball again. I think he's enjoying it right now. Irabu's been to a try out and I think he's found an interested party. He'd like to make a comeback through the Independent Leagues this year. Moving forward, his goal is to try and get back to the Majors or the NPB... He wants to play competitive baseball again."
For those wondering, here are his stats from the last two seasons he pitched in Japan after returning from the US.
