NPB: Yano begins throwing program; Masahiro Tanaka vs Yuki Saito re-match?

HANSHIN TIGERS

...Akihiro Yano began a throwing program that involves using three fingers instead of two. The hope is that using three fingers will take away some of the pressure on his elbow when he throws the ball.

Said Yano, "My elbow would hurt whenever I tried to throw the ball [using two fingers]. I'd like to try and get used to throwing with three fingers if I can. I don't know that I'll be able to do it during games though."

RAKUTEN EAGLES

...Masahiro Tanaka picked up his third consecutive complete game victory last night against the Chiba Lotte Marines. The last pitcher to do that was Satoru Kanemura for the Nippon Ham Fighters in 1999.

YOKOHAMA BAY STARS

...The 12 hits Hayato Terahara surrendered in his start last night set a new career high for him.

YOMIURI GIANTS

...The Giants played in Saga for the first time in club history and managed to draw 15,876 fans to a stadium that maxes out at 16,000. And based on the video footage I've seen on TV of the fans piling into the stadium, it was a pretty big deal.

OTHER

...Now that the All Japan University Baseball Federation more or less agreed on a College vs NPB game to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the NPB, there's a good chance that fans will have a chance to see Masahiro Tanaka and Yuki Saito face off against each other in a re-match. Could end up being a big story here in Japan if it actually happens: their match-up at the Koshien in the summer of 2006 is still fairly fresh in the memories of a lot of baseball fans.
