NPB: Tigers closing in on Craig Brazell; Surgery a possibility for Graman?

by on May.24, 2009 @ 9:44 am, under NPB

...Craig Brazell and the Tigers appear to have come to basic terms. The next step for him is to fly out to Japan within the next few days to hammer out the finals details on his contract. Brazell could be ready to join the team as early as the beginning of June.

The St. Paul Saints website has also posted a couple entries (here and here) on Brazell's potential contract with the Tigers.

...Tomoyuki Kubota tossed 218 pitches in a bullpen session on the 23rd.

...Kevin Mench will be playing in his first game on the 24th (an intramural game) since being demoted to Ni-gun on the 15th. He is also slated start in a Ni-gun game on the 26th against Chunichi.

...Sho Nakata's comments after yesterday's game:

On your first professional hit...
I was really excited. I was very happy that I was able to record my first hit so soon.

Were you nervous?
I'm playing in a completely different place than when I was in Ni-gun... I was very nervous.

Darvish was pitching for the Fighters...
I was very glad to get a hit in a game that Darvish was pitching in.

On facing Ichi-gun pitchers...
Fastballs seemed much faster... I just didn't want to be overpowered. I swung really hard on those strike outs I had so I'm not too concerned about them.

On what you're going to do with the ball...
I want to give it to my parents.

On what's to come next...
I don't want to go back to Ni-gun. I'm going to work hard to make sure I can stay at Ichi-gun for as long as possible.

...Fernando Seguignol was demoted to Ni-gun on the 24th because he hasn't managed to get out of his hitting funk (16-for-97, 9 R, 3 2B, 4 HR, 15 RBI).

...Nomura's comments after yesterday's loss:

A complete game wouldn't have meant a win for Iwakuma today. We just can't hit a lick right now.

There were chances to score runs...
With two out, right? You can't expect a team that's suffering from Timely Hit Disease to drive in runs with 2 out.

Was Utsumi good?
Not really. The offense just wasn't creative. Offense begins at the top.

Were the Giants creative on offense?
No. They do the same thing as us, but their offense is on another level so they just keep hitting.

...The Lions have not ruled out the possibility that Alex Graman will require surgery on his left shoulder. That could mean the Graman won't be available to the team until the second half of the season.

...Today's Chiba / Hanshin game was rained out and has been rescheduled for 5/26 at Koshien Stadium - 6pm start.

...Kansai Independent League: The Osaka Gold Villicanes and Kobe 9 Cruise played an exhibition game on the 24th at Suminoe Stadium in Osaka. The two teams also collected donations before, during, and after the game for the benefit of the league.

Nakata sounds a bit different than earlier in the season. He got another hit today when he pinch-hit.

Yeah, I was a little surprised by his quotes as well — not quite as cocky as his previous quotes.
