Bobby Valentine… the next Nationals’ manager?

by on Jun.15, 2009 @ 3:16 pm, under Other

Jon Heyman is reporting that Bobby Valentine could be on a list of potential candidates to become the next manager of the Nationals.

Manny Acta appears to be on his way out as Nationals manager, and while respected ex-big league manager Jim Riggleman reportedly will be installed as the interim manager, team higher-ups also have begun internal discussions about permanent candidates. One of those candidates to replace Acta, according to National League sources, is Bobby Valentine, who is currently in his seventh season as manager of the Chiba Lotte Mariners in Japan.

It'll be really interesting to see where Bobby ends up next year.

Will those close to 110,000 signatures make him want to stay in Japan longer, either with the Marines or with some other NPB team? Or will his awful experiences with the Lotte front office ultimately make him want to return to the US?

At this point, it's probably anyone's guess.

Valentine probably wouldn’t be a bad choice for the organization, but I think Heyman is speculating a lot in that piece. The Nats haven’t removed the interim tag from Mike Rizzo’s title, and there hasn’t been very much speculation in the media here on when it might happen. They could be waiting until the offseason to interview other candidates, but it would probably be best if they resolve the GM situation before hiring the next manager.

I think it’s also still a little difficult to gauge where Bobby wants to go. And when I say where, I’m talking countries, not necessarily teams.

Where ever he ends up, I’m sure he’ll be able to find a job.
