NPB: More on Iwakuma; Hanshin stockholders voice their opinions

...The Tigers almost had a scare last night when Tomoaki Kanemoto and Takashi Toritani collided in the field in the third. Kanemoto appeared to get the brunt of the collision, but he ended up staying in the game.

Tigers' Chief Trainer said, "Kanemoto said he feels like he was knocked out. But we didn't go to the hospital or anything, just iced him down." On the line for Kanemoto, of course, was his "every inning of every game" streak that he managed keep intact, and which now stands at 1,388 games.

...Craig Brazell's went 0-for-4 last night against the Nippon Ham Fighters, ending his 4 game consecutive home run streak.

...Some better quotes from stockholders at yesterday's stockholder's meeting:

Stockholder 1:
"The Tigers are dropping. Last year's foreigner didn't really work out and things are much worse this. Including the new comers, we want to know more about how these players were picked. We just don't have any clue. I want to know what they think about all these players that haven't panned out."

Stockholder 2:
Their awful play / record is the cause for all the questions. We got an explanation from the director, but we wanted to hear something a little more specific and concrete.

Stockholder 3:
I'd like to see the team develop more homegrown talent. I don't mind if it costs a little more, I just want them to place more focus on [developing] Ni-gun.

...More on Hisashi Iwakuma: Iwakuma was diagnosed with inflammation in the triceps brachii muscle (上腕三頭筋付着部の炎症) in his left arm. It doesn't appear to be serious though.

Said Katsuya Nomura, "It isn't serious. Lucky, unlucky... We have some off-days coming up and [removing him from the active roster] might give him a nice chance to relax."

...Ask Nomura why the team is doing well right now and he might tell you it has something to do with his new watch. He received a new French Bell & Ross watch from team owner Toru Shimada on his birthday and since wearing it, the team has gone 4-1.

Said Nomura, "Please write this down. I'm sure he'll be happy to read about it."

...The Swallows banged out 4 home runs against the Chiba Lotte Marines last night. The last time the team accomplished that was back on September 17, 2007 against the Chunichi Dragons at Jingu Stadium.

  • Norichika Aoki in the 3rd inning off Yoshihisa Naruse
  • Jamie D'Antona in the 6th inning off Taiki Nakago
  • Ryoji Aikawa in the 8th inning off Tadahiro Ogino
  • Shinichi Takeuchi in the 8th inning off Tadahiro Ogino

...With their loss against the Buffaloes last night, the Bay Stars have pretty much locked up a last place finish during IL play (they are currently 5-16 with 3 games left to play). It will mark the second consecutive season the team has finished with the worst IL record.

...Tetsuya Yamaguchi has now won 14 games in a row since June 21st, 2008, and 6 games from the start of the season. And since giving up a run to the Chunichi Dragons on May 9th, Yamaguchi has not surrendered a run in 17 consecutive game.

...Micheal Nakamura threw over 100 pitches in a bullpen session today. He's trying to work his way back up to the parent club after being dropped from the active roster on the 15th.
