by on Jun.29, 2009 @ 9:37 am, under NPB

...Jeff Williams was removed from the active roster on Monday due to inflammation in his left shoulder. He started feeling some pain in the shoulder on Sunday. Williams will not be allowed to throw for 1 full week.

...The Swallows have decided to turn to the fans for help in naming the trio of Kenichi Matsuoka, Ryota Igarashi, and Chang-Yong Lim.

Entry submissions will be accepted until 8pm on July 13th. The author of the winning entry will receive special a commemorative photo and signed memorabilia featuring the three players.

...Masao Kida has gained the opportunity to become a free agent for the second time in his career. When asked what he thought, he said, "I have nothing to think about, there's really nothing."

Kida first became a free agent in 1998 and signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers. But after being demoted to the minor leagues, he returned to Japan in June 2006 and signed on with the Blue Wave, only to be released in 2001. He returned to the Majors in 2003 when he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but a car accident derailed his career. He did manage to pitch three games with the Dodgers, but was ultimately released. Kida then joined the Mariners in 2004, but was once again released, this time after pitching only 1 game. He returned to Japan and signed a contract with the Yakult Swallows after receiving an invitation from Atsuya Furuta and has been with the team since.

Just a small correction. Today’s (June 30, 2009) said that it was Williams’ shoulder socket that was the problem, not his elbow. Checking the article you linked to at Sanspo says the same thing: 左肩関節炎 (left shoulder socket inflammation and/or arthritis).
