Around the NPB Horn: Tigers – first NPB team to start 3 players over 40 in one game

by on Jul.21, 2009 @ 12:54 am, under NPB

Hanshin Tigers

...When Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi took the mound last night with Akihiro Yano behind the plate, they became the first battery mates over 40. Throw in Tomoaki Kanemoto starting in center and it was the first time in NPB history that 3 players over 40 started a game.

...Things are starting to look bleak for the Tigers. They are 16.5 games behind the Giants with 12 to play against them; 14 games behind the Dragons with 13 to play; and 12.5 behind the Swallows with 13 to play.

...With Yasutomo Kubo being sent down to Ni-gun, the Tigers will start Kai-Wen Cheng out of the bullpen for tonight's game against the Swallows. Cheng has actually started two games this season and is 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA (11 IP, 46 BF, 12 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 4 R, 4 ER).

...Tomoaki Kanemoto hit his 66th sac fly of his career, tying him with Kazuhiro Kiyohara for 20th place on the All-Time list.

Seibu Lions

...By winning his 10th game of the season last night against the Orix Buffaloes, Takayuki Kishi became the first Seibu pitcher (5th in franchise history) since Daisuke Matsuzaka to start their career with 3 consecutive seasons of 10+ wins.

Yakult Swallows

...The Swallows are 8-0 this year in games Keizo Kawashima homers in.

I’m surprised Hanshin went this late in the season with out starting their 41 year-old trio, but then again given that they are 41, it’s no shock that one of them (Yano) was injured.

What a rough start for Yano. He was supposed to be back a lot sooner but then suffered a couple of setbacks that just kept pushing off his return date.

And while just a minor technicality, Yano is still 40 (turns 41 in December) — only Kanemoto and Shimoyanagi are actually 41.
