Around the NPB Horn: Chono a possible back-up pick for the Tigers?

by on Sep.04, 2009 @ 5:14 am, under NPB

Hanshin Tigers

...Takashi Toritani tied his career high of 15 home runs in a season on Wednesday night when he launched a 2-run homer off Swallows' reliever Kosuke Matsui in the 6th inning.

...Kodai Sakurai - it appears his injury could keep him out of action for 3-4 weeks.

...The Tigers have about 10 back-up names in case they can't get Yusei Kikuchi during the draft. Interestingly enough, Hisayoshi Chono is rumored to be on that list.

I wonder if the Tigers would seriously risk their first pick on Chono. He's turned down the Fighters in 2006 and the Marines in 2008 -- what makes the Tigers think he wouldn't turn them down as well?

Hiroshima Carp

...The Carp announced that they will ban jet balloons at home games starting on the 4th when they take on the Hanshin Tigers.

Nippon Ham Fighters

...The Ni-gun Fighters had quite the game on Thursday, beating Shonan 21-1.  On top of the trouncing, every player in the line-up had at least 1 hit, 1 run, and 1 RBI.  I'll try to post a box score of the game when it becomes available. You can see the box score info for the Fighters' here.

...Sho Nakata will likely be removed from the active roster on Friday since he probably won't see much playing time at Ichi-gun.

Rakuten Eagles

...Teppei was not in the starting line-up on Thursday night against the Seibu Lions after hurting his neck by running into the outfield fence on a fielding play during the 6th inning of Wednesday's game.  Teppei is currently listed as day-to-day.

Seibu Lions

...Lions' manager Hisanobu Watanabe mentioned that Takeya Nakamura could make a rehab start on the 6th and be back with the parent club by the 8th, just in time for the series against the Nippon Ham Fighters at the Seibu Dome.

Yakult Swallows

...Chang-Yong Lim was taken off the active roster on Wednesday with lower back pains.

Team trainer Kobayashi said, "It's probably from a build-up of fatigue so I can't really say how serious it is at this point.

Yokohama Bay Stars

...Daisuke Miura is still looking for his first victory against the Yomiuri Giants since August 2005.

@Mike: It would certainly be interesting. And I’m almost want it to happen just because I’m curious to see how he’d react. If he thought being picked by the Fighters or the Marines was bad, how about going to the Giants’ arch-rivals?

And I’d imagine the boos being much stronger if he were to turn down the Tigers.

Yeah, can you imagine if he turned the Tigers down and then eventually did end up on the Giants? Though I suspect that he’s going to get booed no matter what at this point.
