BS11 English Broadcasts in Japan

by on Sep.05, 2009 @ 5:44 pm, under NPB

I didn't realize this until fairly recently, but apparently a channel named BS11 in Japan broadcasts a number of NPB games in English.  And if not for a message from Bill Bickard, the guy that's doing that actual broadcasts, I never would have known.

I'm not sure how many people are familiar with the channel BS11 (not to be mistaken with NHK BS-2), but it's a free channel that's available for anyone to view, provided they have BS digital service.  According to the FAQ on the BS11 site, it appears that the channel is also available via cable service (call your cable provider).

Sadly, I don't have access to this channel.

In any case, here is the remaining English broadcast schedule:

September 8 - Nippon Ham Fighters at Seibu Lions
September 9 - Nippon Ham Fighters at Seibu Lions
September 21 - Orix Buffaloes at Rakuten Eagles

I'll be directing Bill's attention to this blog post so if you have anything you'd like to say to him about the broadcasts, feel free to drop a comment down below.

Incidentally, Bill also did the voice of Fukui-san from Iron Chef.

Bill, will there be a schedule of the games to be broadcasted for 2011? If so, can you give the link to see it and when it might be up. I live in the US and would like to follow the NPB this year.

Bill, can this be seen and/or heard from the US via internet? Is there any internet broadcasts of NPB available?

Unfortunately, BS11 didn’t pick up his contract in 2010. I spoke to Bill via e-mail recently and he said he still wasn’t sure about the 2011.

As for the viewing of NPB games in the US via the Internet… I know of no legal way to watch, other than the Pacific League’s streaming site: http://pa.tv-live.jp/isp/yahoo/. I think I read that the site is (or at least was) accessible from the US last year. Don’t know if that was for the entire season or not though.

The PL stream was accessible in the USA until…I think August of last year. In my nearly five years of watching Pro Yakyu, all I can say is that stuff changes on a yearly basis. The only reliable streams I was able to find were on Justin.TV, and during the regular season you’re lucky if you find anything outside of Hanshin or Yomiuri games.

Do you mean that even on Justin.tv it’s rare that we can find some other teams’ games rather than those of Tigers and Giants?
