NPB: Game Summaries for September 6th, 2009

by on Sep.07, 2009 @ 5:29 am, under Game Summaries, NPB

I have decided that from here on out, for any games where one teams scores 10 or more runs, I'll just do straight scoring recap. I'm still not quite sure on the format, so I've tried another variation for the Chiba Lotte Marines vs Orix Buffaloes game.

======

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Yakult Swallows 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 8 1
Yomiuri Giants 1 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 X 4 6 0

Tokyo Dome | Attendance: 43,830 | Time: 3h 11m | Giants lead series, 14-4-1

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when Hayato Sakamoto (0-for-2, BB, R) came around to score on a ground out  by Alex Ramirez (0-for-3, IBB, RBI) with runners on first and third and 1 out.

The Swallows took a temporary 2-1 lead in the top of the 2nd: Yasushi Iihara (1-for-4, R) led off with a single, followed by a Shinya Miyamoto (1-for-3, HBP, 2B, R) double that put runners on second and third; Iihara scored on a ground out by Keizo Kawashima (0-for-4, RBI) and Miyamoto scored on Ryoji Aikawa's (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) double in to left; Yoshinori (0-for-1) grounded out, runner to third; and Kazuki Fukuchi (1-for-5) struck out to end the inning.

A throwing error by K. Kawashima (SS) on Tetsuya Matsumoto's (0-for-3) grounder in the bottom of the 2nd with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score and gave the Giants a 3-2.

Shinnosuke Abe's (2-for-3, BB, HR, 2 R, RBI) 21st home run of the year in the bottom of the 6th gave the Giants their 4-2 lead.

Marc Kroon entered the game in the top of the 9th and retired the first two batters he faced before giving up a single and a walk to put runners on first and third. But Kroon bore down and got Fukuchi to ground out to end the game.

Yoshinori was tossing a pretty decent game until he popped a blister on his right middle finger and had to be removed from the game. And if not for the error by K. Kawashima in the 2nd that led to 2 unearned runs, his final pitching line wouldn't have looked half as bad.

Missed Opportunities

Giants
2nd: runners on second and third, 2 out > Ogasawara flied out

Masahiko Morino (1-for-3, 2 HBP, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) gave the Dragons a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a home run with a runner on second and 1 out. Masahiro Araki's (3-for-4, R, RBI) single into center with a runner on third and 2 out gave the Dragons a 3-0 in the top of the 2nd.

The Bay Stars finally answered back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 4-3 lead: Ryan Glynn (1-for-2, 2B, R) hit a 1-out double; Takehiro Ishikawa (0-for-5) struck out; Kazuya Fujita (1-for-4, BB, R) walked to put runners on first and second; Shigeru Morikasa (1-for-2, BB, 2B, R, 2 RBI) cleared the bases with a double; Dan Johnson (1-for-3, BB, HR, R, 2 RBI) hit his 21st home run of the year to give the Bay Stars a 4-3 leads; Takahiro Saeki (0-for-4) grounded out to first to end the inning.

Chunichi tacked three more runs on in the top of the 9th when Atsushi Kizuka and Kosuke Kato struggled with their control: Kizuka hit a batter to put runners on first and third and allowed two runs to score on singles by Tony Blanco (3-for-4, HBP, RBI) and Wada; Kato walked two batters, one loading the bases and the other with the bases loaded.  Kato did settle down after issuing his second walk and struck out the last two batters he faced to end the game.

Mazda Stadium | Attendance: 31,887 | Time: 3h 29m | Tigers lead series, 11-9-0

After Jun Hirose (2-for-4) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 1st by flying out to center end the inning, the Carp took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Akihiro Higashide (0-for-4, RBI) hit a sac fly with runners on first and third and 1 out. They had a good start to the bottom of the 3rd when Kenta Kurihara (1-for-3, BB) led off the inning with a single, but any momentum that may have carried quickly disappeared when Kurihara was caught stealing.

On the other side of the diamond, the Tigers also ruined a possible big inning on a caught stealing when Norihio Akahoshi (2-for-4, HBP, 2B, R) led off the top of the 1st with a single and was caught trying to steal second. The next two batters after him got on base via a walk and a single but neither Tomoaki Kanemoto (0-for-4, BB) nor Takahiro Arai (1-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI) could deliver the needed blow.

Keisuke Imai then struck out the side in the top of the 2nd and held the Tigers hitless between the 2nd and 5th innings.  But that quickly changed in the top of the 6th: Keiichi Hirano (1-for-3, BB, R) and Takashi Toritani (2-for-4, R, RBI) started the inning off with singles to put runners on first and second; Kanemoto lined out to first; Arai cleared the bases with a double, advanced to third on the throw, and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead; Takeshi Komatsu relieved Imai and immediately struck out Ikuro Katsuragi (0-for-3, BB) for the second out of the inning; but Ryo Asai (1-for-3, BB, RBI) singled and scored Arai from third; Akihiro Yano (2-for-4) singled to put runners on first and second; and pinch hitter Shinjiro Hiyama grounded out to end the inning.

The Tigers added another run in the top of the 7th when Akahoshi led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt, and scored on a sac fly by Toritani.

Meanwhile, Scott Atchison entered the game for the Tigers in the bottom of the 6th and tossed 2 perfect innings.  Kyuji Fujikawa followed in the 8th and also tossed 2 perfect innings to close out the game and record his 19 save of the year.

This was a huge come-from-behind win for the Eagles, especially with the Lions losing.

But it wasn't a clean victory.

Kohei Hasebe got the start for the Eagles and gave up a run in the top of the 2nd on a sac fly by Makoto Kaneko (0-for-2, BB, RBI) with the bases loaded and 1 out.  His team tied the game in the bottom of the second when Fernando Seguignol (2-for-3, 2 BB, 2B, R, RBI) came around to score on a ground out by Jin Nakatani (0-for-2, BB, RBI) with the bases loaded and 1 out.

But Hasebe gave the lead right back to the Fighters in the top of the 3rd: he surrendered a lead-off double to Hichori Morimoto (1-for-3, 2B, R); walked Atsunori Inaba (0-for-1, 2 IBB, 2 BB, R); and a sac bunt advanced the runners to second and third. Hasebe was quickly replaced by Kenta Satake, but he couldn't keep the runs from scoring: he surrendered a bases clearing single to Terrmel Sledge (1-for-4, 2 RBI) that gave the Fighters a 3-1 lead.  But after the single to Sledge, the Eagles' bullpen hunkered down: it surrendered only 1 hit between the 4th and 9th innings and never once allowed a runner to get past second.

On offense, the Eagles chipped away at the Fighters' 2-run lead: Ryuji Miyade (2-for-2, BB, RBI) hit a sac fly with runners on first and third and 1 out in the bottom of the 4th to make it 3-2; and the tying run scored in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single by Seguignol with runners on first and second and 1 out.

The Eagles threatened to score the go ahead run in the 6th,  7th, and 8th innings, but Shintaro Ejiri (6th), Masanori Hayashi (7th and parts of the 8th), and Yoshinori Tateyama managed to keep them off the scoreboard.  But the Eagles were persistent and it finally paid off in the bottom of the 9th.

Tateyama retired the first two batters he faced in the inning, and then things went downhill: he walked Seguignol, gave up a single to Daisuke Kusano (2-for-4, BB, R), and then walked Linden to load the bases.  Masato Nakamura then entered the game as a pinch hitter and hit a single into center to give the Eagles a walk-off, 4-3 victory over the Fighters.

Very straightforward approach on the style you used in the Marines’ game. I like it. As for the Swallows, it seems they are just in a complete free fall at this point.

The Tigers are closer to the Swallows than the Lions are to the Eagles. But none of them are really playing well.

The ball Nakamura hit to center in the Eagles sayonara win over the Fighters probably should have been caught, so they got a break on that one. Two sayonara wins, the only Ws for them in their last six games, it’s nice when it happens. But you can’t count on pulling those out every time.

No doubt the Eagles were lucky in their victory over the Lions. But as an Eagles fan, I’ll take it. Especially since there were a number of games earlier on that appeared to go the opposite direction.

Over the course of a full season, I think these things tend to get balanced out.
