NPB Standings Update: Week 24

by on Sep.07, 2009 @ 7:06 pm, under NPB

Central League

Another bad week for the Swallows as they continue to spiral out of control. They had a chance to drop the Tigers back in the standings with a 3-game series against them at Koshien, but all they could muster was 1 victory.  And it didn't get much better against the Giants as they went 0-2-1 against the front runners of the CL.

The Dragons also had a bad week as they went from being only 4 games out of first to being 7.5 out of first.

Not a particularly interesting week from a match-up perspective (no direct match-ups). Obviously, every game the Swallows play will be important.  They'll be facing the Hiroshima Carp (10-7-0) and Chunichi Dragons (12-8-0) this week. The Tigers have a challenging first half of the week as they take on the Dragons (6-11-0), but then it's 3 games against the door mats of the Central League (12-6).

Chunichi Dragons vs Hanshin Tigers @  Koshien (9/8 - 9/10)

Wins Runs HR SB E BA ERA
Dragons 11 74 13 12 6 .247 2.82
Tigers 6 51 9 9 8 .233 4.14

Yakult Swallows vs Chunichi Dragons  @ Nagoya Dome (9/11 - 9/13)

Wins Runs HR SB E BA ERA
Swallows 12 98 22 10 7 .282 3.93
Dragons 8 87 22 10 13 .258 4.60

It'll be interesting to see how the Dragons and Tigers react to the loss of key players on their teams. The Dragons found out that Atsushi Fujii suffered a broken rib after crashing into Kazuhiro Wada on Sunday.  And the Tigers lost a key component of their offense in Craig Brazell to internal bruising in his left quadriceps muscle.

Central League Week 24

Pacific League

At the close of last week, the Hawks trailed the Fighters by 5.5 games. This past week, they narrowed the gap to 3.5 games by going 5-1.  It also helped that the Fighters struggled and only went 3-3.  With Yu Darvish likely returning this week, the Fighters will look to get things back on track.

The Eagles continue to hang onto third place, thanks largely to the Hawks' sweep of the Lions during the second half of the past week.

The Lions take on the Fighters and the Buffaloes this week while the Eagles take on the Buffaloes and Hawks.
