Some more Yusei Kikuchi news...
Sponichi mentions the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers, and Texas Rangers as teams that sent scouts to Kikuchi's games during the Iwate Tournaments. The Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Seattle Mariners sent scouts to watch Kikuchi play during the Koshien.
Another Sponichi article goes on to say that there are at least 10 MLB clubs interested in Kikuchi.
And calls to Hanamaki Higashi and the Prefectural Offices have increased since Kikuchi's interview with Sponichi yesterday confirmed that he still wanted to go to the Majors.
A couple of clubs offered their take.
Nobuo Minami (Hanshin Tigers Club President): We need to investigate the matter a bit more before we can say anything. I'd like [my] scout in charge to confirm what's been happening to me. Right now, our first pick remains unchanged.
Akira Ishikawa (Lotte Marines VP): He's a Japan's treasure, so for the sake of the NPB and for the sake of the fans, I think he should play in Japan. He's still young, there will be enough time for him to pursue a career in the Majors later on.
Muneo Nakada (Chunichi Dragons head scout): This would be a first case for the high school player to go to the Majors. There are certain restrictions, meaning there's still plenty of hurdles for him to clear. I think it's necessary to involve the Japan High School Baseball Federation and the NPB in these discussions.
