Around the NPB Horn: Abe goes boom… And the scoreboard goes bust.

by on Sep.10, 2009 @ 8:53 am, under NPB

Hanshin Tigers

...Minoru Iwata picked up his 4th complete game of the season and 2nd complete game shut-out of the year.  The last Tiger to pick up that many complete games was Kei Igawa with 8 in 2006.  And the last time a Hanshin pitcher tossed a complete game shut-out against the Chunichi Dragons, as Iwata did on Wednesday night, was in 2004, also accomplished by Igawa.

..An estimated 3,000 people showed up to take a look at the Colonel. At one point nearly 200 people were in line just to get a peak of him.

...The Tigers found out that Jeff Williams had surgery on his left shoulder on Wednesday.  The club continues to toe the "we'll wait and see how he is before we decide what to do" line.

...Interesting stat of the day from Sanspo: Takashi Toritani is 36-for-104 during his first at bats.

Nippon Ham Fighters

...Yu Darvish held a 62-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday.  At this point, it seems likely that he'll be added to the active roster for a start against the Chiba Lotte Marines on the 13th.

Yakult Swallows

...The Swallows have lost their last 11 straight series.  You have to go back 39 years to 1970 for the last time they did that.

Yomiuri Giants

...Shinnosuke Abe's home run Wednesday night against the Yokohama Bay Stars carried 150m and hit the scoreboard out in center.

Looks like he broke it:
