Nagoya Dome | Attendance: 35,697 | Time: 2h 46m | Swallows lead series, 12-11-0

The Chunichi Dragons finally figured out Shohei Tateyama and beat the Swallows, 7-2.

The Dragons took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st: with runners on first and third, Kazuhiro Wada (2-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) drove in a run with a single into right that put runners on first and second; Kazuki Inoue (1-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI) followed with a triple to clear the bases.

The Swallows answered back with a run in the 2nd: with 1 out, Shinya Miyamoto (2-for-4, R) hit a single to left, stole second despite Ryosuke Morioka (1-for-4) striking out, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Ryoji Aikawa's (2-for-4, RBI) single into right.

In the bottom of the 5th, with a runner on second and 1 out, a throwing error by Tateyama on Hirokazu Ibata's (2-for-4, 2 R) grounder back to the mound allowed the Dragons to take a 4-0 lead. An out later, Masahiko Morino (1-for-2, 2 BB, 2B, R, RBI) drove in Ibata from second with a double into right.

Aaron Guiel's (1-for-4, HR, R, RBI) 23rd home run of the year in the bottom of the 6th with 2 outs gave the Swallows their second and final run of the game.

Wada led off the bottom of the 6th with a home run of his own, number 26 on the year, and gave the Dragons a 6-2 lead.  Chunichi tacked on another run in the bottom of the 7th on an RBI double by Tony Blanco (2-for-4, 2B, R, RBI)  with runners on first and second and 1 out.

Miyamoto led off the top of the 9th with an infield single and was replaced by a pinch runner.  That move didn't make much of a difference as the next batter, Morioka, grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.  Aikawa followed with another infield single, but the game ended with Kazuki Fukuchi (1-for-2) grounding out to first.

Koshien | Attendance: 46,677 | Time: 2h 47m | Tigers lead series, 14-7-0

With the Swallows' loss earlier in the day, the Tigers moved into third place with their 2-1 win over the Bay Stars.

Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi, Scott Atchison, and Kyuji Fujikawa combined to hold the Bay Stars to just 1 run on 3 hits.  The one run that scored came in the top of the 3rd with Shimoyanagi on the mound: Takehiro Ishikawa (1-for-3, 3B, R) led off the inning with a triple and scored on Shingo Takeyama's (1-for-2, RBI) single into center.

In the top of the 9th, Fujikawa struck out the first 2 batters of the inning before giving up a single to Yuta Naito (1-for-1).  But he quickly ended the game by getting Takahiro Saeki (0-for-4) to ground out to second.

On offense, the Tigers got a little help from the Bay Stars.  In the bottom of the 4th, with Tomoaki Kanemoto (1-for-4, 2B, R) on second and Takashi Toritani (1-for-3, BB, R) on third, a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.  Takahiro Arai (1-for-3, BB), up to bat during the wild pitch, walked to put runners on first and third.  The Tigers then took the lead when Kanemoto came around to score on Wei-Chu Lin's (1-for-3, RBI) grounder back to the pitcher.

This wasn't exactly a resounding win by the Tigers, but it was good enough to beat the Bay Stars and get them into third place.

Mazda Stadium | Attendance: 32,054 | Time: 3h 6m | Giants lead series, 10-6-3

The Giants continued their march to clinch the top spot in the Central League by beating the Carp, 4-2.

An RBI single by Michihiro Ogasawara (1-for-5, R, RBI), followed by a 2-run homer by Alex Ramirez (2-for-3, BB, 2B, HR, R, 2 RBI) gave the Giants a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st.

The Carp answered back with single runs in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th:

3rd inning: with Akihiro Higashide (3-for-4, R) on second and Tetsuya Kokubo (0-for-2, 2 BB) on first and 2 out, Andy Phillips (1-for-4, RBI) drove in Higashide with a single into left.  That left runners on first and third with 2 out for Kenta Kurihara (0-for-4), who struck out to end the inning.
4th inning: Scott McClain (1-for-4, HR, R, RBI) led off the inning with his 15th home run of the year.  A fly out to center, a single by Masato Akamatsu (1-for-2), a fly out to second, and a single by Kenta Maeda (1-for-2) put runners on first and third and 2 out, but Higashide grounded out to first to end the inning.

In the top of the 5th, the Giants tacked on one last run: Tetsuya Matsumoto (1-for-5, R) led off the inning with a double; Ogaswara flied out to short; Ramirez flied out to right, runner to third; and Yoshiyuki Kamei (2-for-4, RBI) dropped down a surprise squeeze that allowed Matsumoto to score and Kamei to reach first safely -- Kamei made the decision to squeeze on his own.

Marc Kroon tossed a perfect 9th for his 23rd save of the year.

Sapporo Dome | Attendance: 42,069 | Time: 2h 25m | Fighters lead series, 17-6-0

Thanks to Yu Darvish and the Fighters' defense, they finally managed to stop their slide and beat the Marines, 3-1.

The Fighters took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Shinji Takahashi (2-for-3, BB, RBI) with a runner on third and 2 out.  They extended it to 2-0 in the bottom of the second on two back-to-back, 1-out doubles by Yoshio Itoi (2-for-4, 2 2B, R) and Tomohiro Nioka (1-for-3, 2B, RBI).

The Marines finally got on the board in the top of the 8th when Tomoya Satozaki (2-for-3, 2B, R) hit a 1-out double and scored 1 out later on a double by Tsuyoshi Nishioka (2-for-4, 2B, RBI).

Eiichi Koyano's (2-for-4, HR, R, RBI) 9th home run of the year in the bottom of the 8th gave the Fighters their 3-1 lead.

Things almost went sour for Hisashi Takeda and the Fighters in the top of the 9th.  A fielding error allowed Kazuya Fukuura (0-for-4) to reach first.  Tadahito Iguchi (1-for-4, 2B) flied out to right and Shoitsu Ohmatsu (1-for-4) hit into a force.  Tasuku Hashimoto (1-for-4) then hit a single into right that put runners on first and third.  But Takeda bore down and got Toshiaki Imae (0-for-4) to ground out to short to end the inning and the game.

A note about the Fighters' defense:

1st inning, Nishioka on third, 1 out. Morimoto made a nice catch on a fly ball hit by Fukuura. Morimoto then quickly threw the ball home and threw out Nishioka at home.

2nd inning, Ohmatsu on first, 1 out, Itoi made a nice catch on a fly ball hit toward the gap by T. Hashimoto.

6th inning, Satozaki on first, 1 out, Tanaka made a nice leaping catch on a Nishioka line drive.

9th inning, Minami on first, 1 out, Ohmatsu hit a hot shot down the third base line that Koyano smothered, recovered, and threw over to second just in time to get Minami.

Yahoo Dome | Attendance: 32,367 | Time: 2h 55m | Eagles lead series, 11-9-0

The Softbank Hawks beat the Eagles, 2-1, behind a strong outing by their ace, Toshiya Sugiuchi.

Sugiuchi dominated Eagles and held them to just 3 hits over 9 innings of work and struck out 11.  After giving up a 1-out walk to Todd Linden (0-for-2, BB) in the second and getting Jin Nakatani (0-for-3) to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning, Sugiuchi retired 20 straight batters before giving up a 2-out double in the top of the 9th.

The only run the Eagles were able to score off Sugiuchi came in the top of the 1st with 1 out: Yosuke Takasu (0-for-3, BB, R) walked on 7 pitches, was bunted over to second, and scored on a single into center by Takeshi Yamasaki (1-for-3, BB, RBI).

Darrell Rasner wasn't quite as crisp, he did hold his own: he scattered 6 hits over 8.1 innings.  Other than a solo home run by Motohiro Yoshikawa (1-for-3, HR, R, RBI) in the bottom of the 5th, Rasner managed to get out of most of the trouble he pitched himself into. Except for the bottom of the 9th: Nobuhiko Matsunaka (1-for-3, BB) led off with a single; Takeshi Tsuji entered the game to pinch run for Matsunaka; Yuya Hasegawa (1-for-3, BB) walked; Hidenori Tanoue (0-for-3) advanced the runners with a sac bunt, runners on second and third; pinch hitter Hitoshi Tamura was intentionally walked to load the bases; Hisao Arakane entered the game to pinch run for Tamura; Kanehisa Arime relieved Darrell Rasner; and Munenori Kawasaki (3-for-3, BB, RBI) hit a walk-off single into center to end the game and give the Hawks a 2-1 victory.

Rasner didn't look very happy after being pulled with the bases loaded, but he was already at 138 pitches and probably should have been gone after 8 (118 pitches).  My guess is that Nomura was 1) worried about the pen, and 2) loves complete game and wanted Rasner to try for one.  But this was also Ranser's first Ich-gun start since June 10th.  And while Rasner did have a 1-2-3 8th, he also allowed at least 1 base runner in every other inning he pitched.
