Over 10 MLB clubs have dropped by to say hello to Yusei Kikuchi (just a simple hello to express interest and nothing more apparently).
It also appears that Kikuchi won't be making any visits to the US as he expressed in an earlier interview.
A partial list of teams that have sent scouts to watch Kikuchi pitch this year:
Los Angeles Dodgers
New York Mets
New York Yankees
San Francisco Giants
About 30 members of the media showed up to talk to Hiroshi Sasaki on Tuesday.
The informal press conference lasted about 30 minutes.
And here are some more quotes from the press conference:
About Kikuchi's desire to go to the Majors.
His desire to go the Majors isn't 100%. It's at about 50-50 right now.
About needing to make a decision relatively soon because.
That's true. To that end, we have discussed when it would be best to declare [his intentions] with the Japan High School Baseball Federation. I have also heard about what happened when Tazawa decided to go to the Majors last year.
On which system is better at bringing players (US vs Japan).
There are a number of things I'd like to discuss with MLB teams in early October, but in visiting the US during the Japan - US exhibition games, the atmosphere at the ball parks is really nice... And I figure that the US will most likely be the place where Kikuchi will ultimately play. But there is the language barrier... I also think Japan's method of working players hard is also good. I would like to tell his parents all the good points about the US and Japan.
On whether or not discussions might move forward during September.
We have the National Tournament and so we're both very busy. I don't think it's likely.
