Around the NPB Horn: Obispo strikes out four in the 6th

by on Sep.18, 2009 @ 7:50 am, under NPB

Yakult Swallows

...Kenichi Matsuoka has given up 12 runs in his last 5 appearances (5.2 innings) and will likely be demoted to Ni-gun later today.

Yokohama Bay Stars

...Tomio Tashiro's comments on returning to manage at Ni-gun:

"I'm grateful for the opportunity.  I learned a number of things during my run as interim manager, like things we need to work on.  And I take great pleasure in seeing youngsters I've brought up succeed at Ichi-gun."

Yomiuri Giants

...Wirfin Obispo struck out 4 batters in the 6th and became the 13 player in NPB history to accomplish the feat.  It was also the first 4 strike out inning since April 3, 2007 when Hideaki Wakui did it against the Softbank Hawks.  Obispo is also the third Giant (Okajima 1997, Maeda 1995) and second foreigner (Donald Lemon, YAK, 200) to strike out 4 in an inning.

...Nippon TV will be broadcasting the three game series between the Giants and Chunichi Dragons that begins on the 21st.  At this point in time, the earliest the Giants can clinch first place in the CL is on the 22nd.  But assuming things don't go quite as smoothly, Nippon TV is currently considering broadcasting the three game series between the Giants and Hiroshima Carp that begins on the 25th.

In 2007, Nippon TV cut away from the Giants' clinching game for a regularly scheduled program, but still broadcasted the images from the game in a smaller window at the bottom of the screen.  That apparently wasn't enough as the TV station received about 1,000 complaints from Giants' fans.

The TV station once again dropped the ball last season when they didn't carry the broadcast when the Giants clinched at Jingu Stadium.

Nippon TV is apparently hoping to make good with Giants' fans this year.
