Around the Horn: Nishioka ties PL record for lead-off homers

Chiba Lotte Marines

...The Marines announced on Thursday that they will check banners at the outfield seat entrances.

...Tsuyoshi Nishioka tied a Pacific League record after hitting his 8th lead-off homer of the year.  The NPB record of 9 was set by Yoshinobu Takahashi in 2007.

...The Marines announced three more players were diagnosed with the swine flu: Toshiki Tsuboi (P), Keisuke Hayashi (P), and Ken Shinzato (C).  All three players are on their way to a full recovery.

...The following 8 players were told that they won't be returning to the team next season:

Kanda, Yoshihide P - wants to keep playing
Tejima, Satoshi P - unknown
Takagi, Koji P - wants to keep playing
Eguchi, Ryosuke P - unknown
Kobayashi, Noriyuki P (Ikusei) - wants to keep playing
Tanaka, Takahiro P (Ikusei) - wants to keep playing
Shirakawa, Daisuke INF (Ikusei) - unknown
Otani, Ryuji OF (Ikusei) - unknown

Hanshin Tigers

...Along with Kento Tsujimoto, the Tigers also won't be asking Yasuhiro Nakamura and Takuya Kiko back to the team for the 2010 season.  An official announcement will be made at some point in the near future.

All three players are Ikusei pitchers.

...Kentaro Sekimoto was taken out of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning of Wednesday night's game after he felt some tightness in his body.

...Ikusei Yasuhiro Nakamura (P) announced that he'll be retiring at the end of the season.

...Hanshin Electric Railway announced that they will be making Koshien Kyujo more environmently friendly with the installation of solar panels.  The panels will be installed along the roof that overhangs the seats behind home plate.

According to the announcement, the panels will cut down on 133 tons of carbon dioxide a year.  Koshien Kyujo would become the first pro stadium to employ the use of solar panels.

Hiroshima Carp

...Koichi Ogata announced that this will be his last season.

The Carp will hold a retirement ceremony for Ogata during the final home game of the season.

I think it's awful for me to announce my retirement during a time such as this when the team and the fans are fighting together as one to win.

I would like to continue fighting with everyone over the remaining games on the schedule.

Nippon Ham Fighters

...Yoshio Itoi hit a foul ball of his left knee during Wednesday's game against the Orix Buffaloes a suffered a bruise that kept him out of the starting line-up tonight.

Rakuten Eagles

...The Eagles' Magic Number is now 2.

Softbank Hawks

...Tadashi Settsu arrived in Sendai on Wednesday ready to play.  Settsu missed a few games because he was feeling under the weather.

Yakult Swallows

The Swallows announced that they will not extend contracts to the following players for the 2010 season:

Saito, Takayuki OF - wants to keep playing
Makitani, Usami OF - unknown
Maruyama, Takashi P- wants to keep playing
Oyamada, Takao C (Ikusei) - retirement

...Masao Kida also won't be returning to the club next season.  Kida would still like to continue pitching and will look for a new team to join during the off-season.

Yokohama Bay Stars

...The Bay Stars informed the following players that they won't be asking them back for the 2010 season:

Yokoyama, Yukiya P
Yamakita, Shigetoshi P
Mitsuhashi, Naoki P
Okamoto, Naoya P
Kuremoto, Shigenori INF
Saito, Hidemitsu INF

Yomiuri Giants

...The Giants informed Tatsuo Kato that they won't be asking him back to next season.

Kato joined the team last year after he Giants saw him at the November try-outs.
