Games of interest – October 3rd, 2009

by on Oct.03, 2009 @ 4:44 pm, under NPB

There are 5 games on the schedule today and two are already underway.

Of interest:

Swallows vs Tigers @ Koshien

The Swallows play a direct game against the Tigers tonight.  Masanori Ishikawa takes the mound for Yakult against Yuya Ando.

Ishikawa has had limited success against the Tigers this seasons, going 2-3 in 5 games with a 4.15 ERA (30.1 IP, 31 H, 11 BB, 1 HBP, 15 R, 14 ER).  Ando has been something of a polar opposite, doing extremely well against the Swallows (5-0, 1.19 ERA, 33 IP, 30 H, 9 BB, 4 HBP, 8 R, 7 ER).

This is a very important game for the Swallows, especially after they lost last night's game against the Hiroshima Carp.  Lose again tonight and they'll fall 2 games behind the Tigers.

Lions vs Eagles @ Kleenex Stadium

If my calculations are correct, this is a basically a must-win game for the Lions.  They are currently 68-67-4 with 5 games remaining on their schedule.  The Eagles are 73-62-1 with 8 games remaining and the Hawks are 73-63-5 with 3 games remaining.

If the Lions lose tonight and they go on to win their next four, they would finish the season with a 72-68-4 record.  If the Eagles win tonight and lose every game on the schedule, they'd go 74-69-1.  That would still allow them to retain a half game lead over the Lions.

And with that in mind, the Lions send "Eagles' Killer" to the mound to stave off elimination: Kazuki Hoashi (vs Eagles - 2-0, 1.09 ERA, 24.2 IP, 18 H, 6 BB, 2 HBP, 3 R, 3 ER).

Marines vs Fighters @ Sapporo Dome

The only thing that makes this game noteworthy is the fact that it's Bobby's last game at Sapporo Dome.
