Around the NPB Horn: Buffaloes want to cut Rhodes’ salary by up to 50%

by on Oct.06, 2009 @ 10:15 am, under NPB

Chunichi Dragons

...The Dragons' will be heading out to Aichi Prefecture for the Fall training camp at Agui Baseball Stadium.  They were originally scheduled to hold their training camp at Nagoya Dome, but with the stadium undergoing construction work, they decided to move their training camp to Aichi.

Hanshin Tigers

...Atsushi Noumi will likely get the start for the Tigers on the 5th against the Hiroshima Carp at Mazda Stadium.

Noumi has tossed 24.1 scoreless innings at Mazda Stadium so far this year.

Orix Buffaloes

...The Buffaloes may want Tuffy Rhodes back next year, but they also want him back with a big pay cut.

According to Sponichi, the club might be looking to cut Rhodes' salary by as much as 50%, citing age as a primary concern (he'll be 42 in August next year).

Rakuten Eagles

...Teppei is currently listed as day-to-day after he was hit by a pitch in his right calf in the 9th inning of Monday night's game against the Orix Buffaloes.

The Eagles are hoping he won't have to miss any games since losing him at this point would be a huge blow to their offense.

...Even thought Katsuya Nomura promised Masahiro Tanaka a watch if he won 15 games, it doesn't appear likely that he'll get one.

Said Nomura, "They got too many hits off him.  His 15th win wasn't very impressive, not to where I can say, 'Congratulations and here you go.'  Actually, I feel like asking him for a watch instead."

Seibu Lions

...Takeya Nakamura is the first Japanese player in the Pacific League since Hiromitsu Ochiai (1986, 50 HR) to hit over 46 HRs in a season.

Yakult Swallows

...The injury bug has hit the Swallows at the worst possible time, making Norichika Aoki's health of utmost importance.

Said Aoki, "I'm ok.  I can't afford to get lost and be taken out of the line-up. ... We're heading into the critical stretch drive.  I'd like to win every game if possible."

Since 9/21, Aoki is 19-for-42 (.452) with 3 HR and 9 RBI.

Yomiuri Giants

...The rain postponed yesterday's game against the Yakult Swallows and could give Tetsuya Utsumi another shot to win his 10th game.  If he can win 10 this season, it will give him four consecutive seasons of 10+ wins.
