Aomori University Shota Ichinoseki wants to go to the Majors

by on Oct.23, 2009 @ 8:26 pm, under College

According to Sanspo, 24-year-old right-handed pitcher  Shota Ichinoseki out of Aomori University would like to try and latch on to a team in the Majors.  Ichinoseki hasn't put up any big numbers, but thinks he can continue growing if given the opportunity from an MLB team.

Ichinoseki tops out at 144km/h and can throw a slider, fork, and a number of other breaking pitches.

One thing that could put up some red flags is the fact that he was out with a right shoulder injury and could only pitch in 2 games between the Spring and Fall leagues.  But the injury may have been a good thing as it made Ichinoseki adjust his motion to something that should put less strain on his arm.

"I feel like I can throw with my whole body now," said Ichinoseki of his new delivery.

There are plans for Ichinoseki to visit Taiwan in November to meet some MLB scouts for a basic tryout.  Playing in the minors or for an independent league team are all acceptable options for him.

He IS on the list of college guys who submitted their letters of intent, so I guess it remains to be seen whether anyone in NPB bothers with him or not, first, doesn’t it?

I think the article I quoted basically assumed that none of the teams in the NPB would be interested enough to draft him.

He could also ignore whatever team tries to sign him until the March 31st signing deadline and then head off to the majors. Of course he’d be penalized, but he could be willing to pay that price.

Or maybe he’ll pull a Tazawa and submit a letter to all the teams asking them not to pick him.
