Draft News and Notes: Kiyota could turn the Marines away

Chiba Lotte Marines

...It seems there's a chance that 4th round draft pick Ikuhiro Kiyota might turn down the Marines.

According to his manager, Kiyota had said if he would return to NTT Higashi Nihon if he wasn't selected within the first three rounds of the draft.

Said Kiyota, "I'm happy that I was selected, but being selected in the fourth is upsetting.  Honestly, I really don't know what to do."

Hisayoshi Chono, who turned down the Fighters (2006, 4th round) and Marines (2008, 2nd round), apparently reached out to Kiyota and told him, "People around you might say things, but in the end, it's your decision."

Hanshin Tigers

...visited Ikusei 1st round draft pick Shuhei Takada on Wednesday.

Takada is excited about joining the Tigers as he grew up watching the Tigers.  His parent's house is right around the corner from Koshien Stadium.

...Shunsuke Fujikawa's college baseball manager Tatsumoto Enomoto dropped by Toho Gas to explain Fujikawa's current situation.

Said Enomoto, "I told them the situation about the Tigers selecting Fujikawa.  I also explained to them that even though he did agree to join Toho Gas at one point, it's still possible he could ultimately turn them down."

Seibu Lions

...The Lions could hold Yusei Kikuchi's press conference at the Seibu Dome.

"If holding an ordinary press conference isn't big enough, we can just hold it at the Seibu Dome," said Hisanobu Watanabe.  "It'll be a nice show for the fans if I present Kikuchi with a Seibu Lions' uniform on the mound.  I'm sure they'll love it."

In 1998, the Lions held Daisuke Matsuzaka's press conference at the Tokyo Prince Hotel.  Over 300 members of the press showed up for that event.  If the team were to hold Kikuchi's press conference at the Seibu Dome, it'll be a club first.

...Kikuchi apparently doesn't like soccer much.

...Kikuchi Q&A with the media:

On being visited by the Lions...

We met for about 5 minutes and I told them I looked forward to playing for them.  They said we'd talk about the details some other time, but I felt something.

Your impression on Seibu...

I saw my first game while I was in elementary school.  It was a game that opened in Iwate with Seibu playing against Orix.  The last game I saw was when I was in Junior High -- it was Seibu against Rakuten and Matsuzaka started the game.  I feel like there's a connection with Seibu.

What do you know about Seibu...

I checked out the dorms online and I took a look a the player's directory.  Looking at the player's directory made me realize I'll be with the team next month.

Your impression on Tokorozawa...

When I said I was a country boy during the draft meetings, people around me said that Tokorozawa would suit me because it was out in the countryside.  I heard there's a lot of green there.  That made me feel better.

On what you'll do now...

I want to play during my first year, so I'll really have to practice hard.  Unless I work hard during the winter, I won't be able to put up results during the season.  Watching the Nippon Series made me realize how much work I need to do.  Winners in the winter will be winners in the summer.

Yokohama Bay Stars

...visited 2nd round draft pick Shigeru Kaga yesterday.
