Around the NPB Horn: Hawks new uniforms in 2010, Fighters to make some coaching changes

by on Nov.08, 2009 @ 3:54 pm, under NPB

Chunichi Dragons

...Masahiro Araki is thinking about riding his bike to and from Fall practice at the Nagoya Dome.  The Dome is about 10km away from Araki's house.

Hanshin Tigers

...The Tigers are currently thinking about shuffling uniforms numbers around again this off-season.

...7 of the 9 young players that signed contracts yesterday:

Kai-Wen Cheng - 16M yen (up 6M yen from this past season)

Yuya Nohara - 6M yen (up 1M yen)

Ikketsu Sho - 13M yen (no change)

Kohei Shibata - 10M yen (no change)

Hiroki Uemoto - 10M yen (no change)

Ryuji Wakatake - 6M yen (down 500,000yen)

Naoto Tsuru - 6.5M yen (down 500,000yen)

...Shibata will likely have to give up his number 2 to Kenji Johjima, but still hasn't heard anything from the club about it.

...Tomoaki Kanemoto begins working out for the start of his 19th season.

...The Tigers have decided to try and get Kenji Johjima into the 2010 Hanshin Calendar.  They are thinking about using a photo from his upcoming press conference.

...The Tigers are thinking about finishing their Fall camp off with a game-like situation.

Said Akinobu Mayumi, "We've worked on a number of things during this camp.  I've been thinking about testing the players out to see just how much they've learned by putting them into game-like situations."

Nippon Ham Fighters

...The following changes in the coaching staff will likely be made:

Masato Yoshii - Ichi-gun pitching coach > Ni-gun pitching coach

Shigeru Kobayashi - Ni-gun pitching coach > Ichi-gun pitching coach

Shinichi Igarashi - Chief pro scout > Ni-gun manager

Terushi Nakajima - Ni-gun batting coach > Chief pro scout

Yoshinari Tokuda - Ni-gun coach (マネジャー) > Ni-gun battery coach

Yukio Tanaka - Ni-gun batting coach

Orix Buffaloes

...Akinobu Okada has said that the team will not play any intra-squad games until the mid-February.

"I think they played a number of games after the second stage of Spring camp, but I think that's too early.  I think it's important to train for a bit longer. ... We need to keep working on communication between the fielders so I don't think we'll have any intra-squad games until mid-February," said Okada.

Rakuten Eagles

...Kensuke Uchimura's goal prior to the 2009 season was to steal 50 bases.  That obviously never happened as he was mired in slump all season and ended up splitting his time between Ichi-gun and Ni-gun.

This off-season, Uchimura appears to be focusing in on one thing: swinging the bat.

"I need to play more games," said Uchimura. "But to play more games I need to be able to hit."

When asked about his goal from last season, Uchimura said, "I don't have any specific stat goals this season.  I just need to go out there and do it. ... Actions speak louder than words."

Softbank Hawks

...The Hawks have decided to introduce a new set of uniforms for the 2010 season.  The team will look to making a uniform that easier to move in.  And to that end, the Hawks have decided to move away from sewed on logos and uniform numbers to printed logos and uniform numbers.  The uniform tops will also likely move away from being buttoned-down to being something similar to a t-shirt.

Yomiuri Giants

...40-year-old veteran Noriyoshi Ohmichi expressed his desire to keep playing in 2010.

Yakult Swallows

...Shohei Tateyama has purchased a road bike and will be using it this off-season to help him train.

...Sponichi seems to think that Yasuhiko Yabuta is on his way to a return to the NPB.

I think there needs to be a different word for マネジャー, because Tokuda-san was certainly not the manager as we think of manager, that was Yoshio Mizukami-kantoku. :P

I just realized that little problem… There were so many changes going on that I completely forgot to find a different word for マネジャー.

I’ve gone back and re-listed it as “coach (マネジャー)” instead.

I didn’t think the uniforms were that bad this season. Perhaps a little conservative.

BTW, you might find this link interesting. It’s a quick overview of how the Hawks uniform has changed over the years.

Great link, thanks for posting it. I think my main problem with the current set is the shade of yellow that they use. I think it would look better if it was gold instead.

I’m confused about Cheng’s salary. I had recorded his salary as 2,000-man last season when his signing was announced, but the ShuBe supplementary Meikan has him at 1,000-man, the same as your SpoNichi reference.

However, Nikkan Sports on November 8 (paper edition) listed Chang’s 2010 salary as 2,100-man, up 100-man from last season, supporting the salary I had him at last year. I can find no mention of part of either of those salaries being a signing bonus.

To throw a little more confusion your way, Sponichi online has his 2010 salary listed at 15M yen.

Seems like no one really knows how much he made last season and how much he’ll be making next season.

BUT, I did find this link that says he salary for 2009 was 10M yen with a signing bonus of 20M yen.

Incidentally, I did find this online Nikkan Sports article that mentioned everything was doubled (20M yen salary with a 40M yen signing bonus).

My guess, Nikkan Sports pulled the trigger a little early on reporting the salary and got it wrong.

      Thanks for the further confusion.

I tend to rely on Nikkan Sports for initial information, then use the Shube Meikan for my final figures. So I guess I’ll just have to wait for the Meikan next spring to finalize the salary for 2010.
