Around the NPB Horn: Award notes, 2010 season Masa Yamamoto’s last?

by on Nov.19, 2009 @ 3:17 pm, under NPB

Chiba Lotte Marines

...The Marines are thinking about promoting Ikusei Kota Sumi to the regular roster.

Chunichi Dragons

...Masahiro Yamamoto said that the 2010 season might be his last.

"Next season could be my last," said Yamamoto.  "At least that's the direction things are moving in right now.  I want to try my hardest and see where that takes me."

Hanshin Tigers

...The Tigers obviously weren't very happy about losing Juan Morillo to the Rakuten Eagles and said that they would work harder to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again, i.e., they'll be more secretive about who they're going after.

Hiroshima Carp

...Ken Takahashi has been asked to help out some of the younger players on the team while he trains during the off-season.  Takahashi was released by the Mets on October 20.

...The Carp will be spending over 100M yen to make a few minor upgrades to their new stadium.  90M will go towards adding solar panels to the roof of their new stadium.  And another 17M will be used to install outdoor bathrooms near the front entrance.

Nippon Ham Fighters

...Yu Darvish won his second MVP award in his 5th year, something only Kazuhisa Inao and Ichiro Suzuki managed to do before him.

...It was the first time in club history that five players were voted to the Best Nine.

Rakuten Eagles

...Katsuya Nomura shot off his usual whines  / complaints as he received his award of merit.

"Hey, isn't this award about 10 years late?," said Nomura.  "I feel like, why now all of a sudden?"

...Marty Brown intends to begin 2010 by returning to Japan on January 5th, well ahead of the Spring camp start date of January 19th.  He wants to catch up with some of the players prior to the start of Spring camp.

Softbank Hawks

...Tadashi Settsu became just the 5th player to win the Rookie of the Year award at or over the age of 27.

Yomiuri Giants

...Tetsuya Matsumoto will be shooting for the "triple three" next season.  That is, .300 BA, 30 SH, 30 SB.

...Alex Ramirez became the first foreign player to win two consecutive MVP awards in a row.

...The forgetful Wirfin Obispo forgot his passport and had to put off returing to the Dominican Republic an extra day.

...The Giants re-signed 4 Ikusei players on Wednesday, including Yukinori Momiyama (2.7M yen, down 300,000yen) and Atsushi Fukumoto (2.4M, no change).

...About 300 people gathered at Akasaka Sakasu on Wednesday night.  And apparently 80% were women.  I guess that would explain all the screams whenever players like Yu Darvish walked down the red carpet.

...4,667 essays on what baseball is, were submitted to the NPB this year.  Three were selected for top prizes while 4 were selected for honorable mentions.

...Free agents can begin negotiating with any team they like, starting today.
