Chiba Lotte Marines

...Koji Takagi announced his retirement on 11/30 and has been invited back as an advance scout.

...The Marines re-signed Akira Ohtsuka to contract worth 23M yen (down 7.6M yen).

...The Marines also re-signed:

Daisuke Hayakawa - 40M yen (down 6M yen)

Masahiko Tanaka - 16.5M yen (up 3.5M yen)

Chunichi Dragons

...The Dragons re-signed Wei-Ying Chen to a contract worth 110M yen (up 75M yen).

Hanshin Tigers

...The Tigers re-signed Minoru Iwata to a contract worth 38M yen (down 2M yen).

...They also re-signed Atsushi Noumi to a contract worth 50M yen (up 32M yen).

Nippon Ham Fighters

...Yu Darvish had his fractured finger checked out on Monday and was told that it would be about 2 more weeks before he can start playing some catch.

Rakuten Eagles

...The Eagles re-signed Hiroshi Katayama to a contract worth 10M yen (down 1M yen).

...Katsuya Nomura was honored on Wednesday by U-Can for his "boyaki" (ぼやき).

The word "boyaki" was picked as one of the top 10 most important words for 2009.

Seibu Lions

...The Lions re-signed Ryoma Nogami to a contract worth 15M yen (up 2M yen).

...The Lions will be making some upgrades to Ohmiya Stadium during the off-season in preparation of Yusei Kikuchi pitching there.

They will spend about 200M yen to install a new scoreboard and will likely make some other minor upgrades moving forward.

...Chikara Onodera dropped by the Saitama Prefecture government offices on Wednesday to donate a portion of the profits from a side project called Saitma Dream Fields.

Together with Hiroyuki Nakajima, they are trying to provide elementary and middle school kids living in Saitama an opportunity to grow some vegetables, like potatoes.

Softbank Hawks

...Shinsuke Ogura would like to a shot at the rotation next season.  He had surgery on his left ankle in July and has been working his way back to health since.

...Satoru Morimoto has been having problems with both his knees and has been working on trying to strengthen his lower body during the off-season with pool walking.

...The Hawks introduced former Orix Buffaloes' Daijiro Ohishi as their new head coach during a press conference on Wednesday.

Yomiuri Giants

...The Giants re-signed Tetsuya Yamaguchi to a contract worth 100M yen (up 55M yen).

...Shun Tono also re-signed a contract on Wednesday: 40M yen (up 24.4M yen).


....Manato Umemura will likely be hanging up his cleats after trying to make a career in pro baseball (he was released by the Buffaloes).  Umemura has already started thinking about his life after baseball.

"Right now, I'm thinking about going back to a technical school.  I thought it might be interesting to get a government job.  I also want to make use of my experience and have been thinking about coaching in the little leagues, or other things I can do to help support the growth of baseball in my home town," said Umemura.
