Pro Yakyu Masters League 2009

The Pro Yakyu Masters League held an All-Eastern vs All-Western game at Hitachinaka Baseball Stadium in Ibaraki Prefecture.  About 45,000 people showed up to watch the game end in a 4-4 tie.

I should also add that 72-year-old Tomoo Wako apparently hit 105km/h on the radar gun during his 1 inning stint.  Wako is the oldest player in the Masters League.

This will actually be the only game for the Pro Yakyu Masters League for the 2009-2010 season.  Due to an overall drop in sponsors, the league had to forgo having it's usual full slate of games.

The Pro Yakyu Masters League started up in 2001 and consists of 5 teams:

  • Fukuoka Zon-Dags
    Made up primarily of former Nishitetsu Lions, Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, Hirshima Carp players and former players born in the Chugoku, Shikuoku, Kyushu regions.
  • Osaka Romans
    Made up primarily of former Hanshin Tigers, Hankyu Braves, Orix Blue Waves, Orix Buffaloes, Kintetsu Buffaloes, and Nankai Hawks players and former players born in the Kinki region.
  • Nagoya 80D'sers
    Made up primarily of former Chunichi Dragons players and former players born in the Chubu region of Japan.
  • Tokyo Dreams
    Made up primarily of former Yakult Swallows, Yokohama Taiyo Whales, Yokohama Bay Stars, Lotte Orions, and Lotte Marines players and former players born in the Kanto region.
  • Sapporo Ambitious
    Made up primarily of former Nippon Ham Fighters, Seibu Lions, and Yomiuri Giants players and former players born in the Sapporo Tohoku area.
