Around the NPB Horn: A code of conduct for MLB scouts in Japan?

by on Jan.07, 2010 @ 3:19 pm, under NPB

Chunichi Dragons

...Motonobu Tanishige is 265 hits away from 2,000.  His goal is to reach 2,000 hits within 3 years and get into the Meikyukai.

Hanshin Tigers

...Kazuya Tsutsui plans on joining Atsushi Noumi for training in Okinawa on the 12th.  He's hoping to learn a thing or two from Noumi by watching him train.

...Kodai Sakurai made an appearance at an event on Wednesday and told people in the audience that he plans on working on his defense in January so that he's fully prepared to play center or right.  Sakurai will be heading out to Okinawa on the 12th for training.

...Hirotaka Egusa worked out in front of reporters for the first time in 2010.  He told reporters that he plans on making some changes to his delivery after watching footage of Yu Darvish.  Seems he's also been studying series photographs of Darvish's motion from the WBC.

Egusa is also hoping he'll be able to hit 150km/h this year.

...Shinobu Fukuhara hopes to make (and stay in) the starting rotation in 2010.

...Tigers GM Shoji Numasawa told reporters on Wednesday that he hopes to re-sign all five of the players still left unsigned as soon as possible.  Numasawa also said that he has already spoken to the agents belonging to the five players.

...Kyuji Fujikawa told reporters that hasn't heard from team president Nobuo Minami.  Minami earlier said that he would like to speak to all five of the players that were still left unsigned.

Hiroshima Carp

...Takahiro Iwamoto dropped by Mazda Stadium on Wednesday to inform the club that he plans on getting married to Yuka Masaki.  The two will file marriage papers on the 10th and hold their wedding ceremony after the 2010 season.

The two are high school sweethearts and had been dating for 7 years.

Nippon Ham Fighters

...Masao Kida held his first practice of the year on Wednesday at Kamagaya.  He's hoping to get his body ready to throw a bullpen session on the first day of Spring camp.

Orix Buffaloes

...The Buffaloes are close to re-signing Greg LaRocca, Alex Cabrera, and Jon Leicester.  If everything goes smoothly, all three should be reporting to Spring camp on time.

Rakuten Eagles

...Masahiro Tanaka made an appearance on Waratte Iitomo's (笑っていいとも!) Telephone Shocking (テレフォンショッキング) corner on Wednesday.  He also wants people to quit referring to him as a pitcher from the "Handkerchief Prince Era."

Softbank Hawks

...Nagisa Arakaki might turn to 3D technology for some insight on how to improve his pitching mechanics.  Kyushu Kyoritsu University (his alma mater) has a system that can record movements via 12 cameras and convert that into 3D video.

...Tadashi Settsu plans on riding a bicycle to help him strengthen his lower body during the off-season.  Takahiro Mahara apparently suggested adding biking to his training.

...Sadaharu Oh has essentially become the Hawks' GM for life.

Yakult Swallows

...Norichika Aoki won't be lifting any weights this off-season.  He decided to skip the weights after he put on extra muscle for the 2009 season and ended up mired in a slump for most of it.  Instead, he will be using other methods to help tighten up his body.

...Tsuyoshi Ueda has joined Aoki in training at Konohana Dome.  He has already received some tips about how to use his lower body during BP.

Yomiuri Giants

...While there was some talk about Yoshinobu Takahashi being converted to a first baseman last season, it seems he will now be focusing on playing the outfield in 2010.

Others

...Asides from talking about a Global World Series, Ryozo Kato and Bud Selig also apparently touched on the possibility of creating a code of conduct for MLB scouts in Japan.  There was also some discussion about having MLB and NPB star players appear in commercials for global causes.
